It was the night after Kurt had gotten his NYADA acceptance letter. It had basically been nothing but celebration after that moment for him and Rachel. They were finally on winter break, and they had spent all day getting the apartment ready for the holidays.
It had been quite a long day, but the apartment ended up looking absolutely wonderful. Rachel practically fell onto the couch. "I don't think I can make it to celebratory dinner tonight, Kurt." She said, yawning. "Come on, Rachel. One last hoorah of the weekend? I already booked us reservations at the amazing Italian place down the street. We both know how much you love their penne arrabiata." Kurt said with puppy dog eyes. Rachel just threw a pillow over her face. "Fine, I'll be ready in an hour." She said, her voice muffled by the pillow. Kurt clasped his hands together. "I knew I'd convince ya! Alright, I'll let you rest for now. But remember, one hour!" he put a blanket over her and left the room.
Rachel had finally (but reluctantly) gotten off the couch to get ready. She put on her heavy coat since the snow had been pretty brutal lately. After a lot of fussing with each other's outfits, they were both finally ready to go. "Okay, let's head out! I am starving." Rachel was actually glad they were going out. But just as they were opening the door, all of the lights turned off.
"Are you KIDDING me?" Rachel huffed. She closed the door and turned on her cell phone light.
Kurt chuckled. "Relax, Rachel. It's just a power outage."
"But I'm SO HUNGRY!" she pouted.
"Okay, don't worry. We'll light some candles, take whatever we have in the fridge, and we'll have a little dinner in. It'll be fun." He patted her shoulder and smiled. They scoured the house for candles and found six, trying to distribute them evenly around the house. Then they went to check the fridge. It was quite an unpleasant surprise. There was nothing in there except for a large carton of eggnog and leftover Chinese take-out. "Wow, we really need to start regularly going to the grocery store." Kurt sighed. They pulled out the eggnog and chow mein and set it on the counter.
"I guess we'll have to make the most out of it," Rachel laughed. She opened the takeout container, which probably contained enough noodles for one person's lunch—that is, if they weren't very hungry. She tried her best to divide it evenly among the two of them. They grabbed the eggnog and the two glasses and sat on the floor by the coffee table.
As Rachel was pouring the eggnog, she cleared her throat. "So I have sort of a confession to make—I've never had eggnog. Like, ever."
Kurt almost choked on his noodles. "What?! But it's the best holiday drink!"
"I don't know, I never wanted to try it, it just looks kind of…creepy."
Kurt let out a laugh. "Well, here's to you trying your first glass of eggnog." He raised his glass to hers and took a sip. She slowly drank the eggnog from her glass and made a nervous face. Then she gulped. "Oh My God, that's really good!" She drank some more. "Why did I never try it?" Rachel poured even more into her glass.
"Told you!" Kurt took another sip from his glass. Rachel smiled at him and then looked around the apartment, smiling even bigger. "You know, I'm so proud of you," she said to him. "I'm proud of us. I wouldn't want to be spending the holidays with anyone else."
"Aw, Rachel," Kurt patted her hand. "Same to you, hon." Rachel raised her glass once again. "A toast to my best friend, and also the first person to get me to finally drink eggnog." Kurt laughed as they clinked their glasses together. He wouldn't deny that he wished that Blaine had been there with them, but right now, he was just happy to be spending Christmas with the best girl he knew.
