Call stood in the freezer section of the grocery store browsing the ice cream selection. "Rainbow sherbet, they've gotta have it!" He lunged to the side when he found it and got a blast of cold air in his face after opening the door. Another five minutes of store browsing got him the rest of the ingredients. He'd invented the dessert of a scoop of sherbet over soda, topped with jellybeans last summer with his friends and wanted to bring some back to share with Alastair. Paying for the sweets he walked out into the blazing sun back home.
He let the door bang as he went in. "I'm back! Anyone home?" There was no response, shrugging he went into the kitchen and poured the soda into glasses. "Hey Ali! I know you like Sprite but I got Mountain Dew instead, so don't hit me or anything!" He was in the middle of scooping the ice cream on top when Alastair walked in. "Do you still want-" Call stopped and stared at him. Then dropped the ice cream scoop, realizing what he'd done.
"Call?" Alastair asked cautiously and stepped closer.
"I'm sorry, I-" Call stammered, then looked at the dessert on the counter. He made a move to knock it into the sink, but Alastair grabbed it.
"I'm sorry, I didn't realize what I was doing." Call whispered. Alastair pulled him into a light hug.
"It's okay, Call. It's just ice cream." He wiped away some of the tear tracks from Call's face.
They took the drinks out and sat on the porch. Call spooned a single jelly bean into his mouth and sipped at the soda and ice cream mixture. "Weird. I thought for sure eating this would trigger more memories but it doesn't. It just tastes really good. You really don't mind eating this with me?"
Alastair smiled, "No, I don't mind sharing a treat with my son." He made a face as he ate some of the ice cream and jelly beans. "Although my taste for jellybeans and sherbet seems to have vanished over the years."
Call laughed, and they finished their treat on the porch together.
