Chapter 1

Awoken by screeching tires and screams outside my bedroom window, I jumped out of bed and peered outside. I wished I had not looked. There were monsters attacking my neighbors. They appeared to be eating them! Without thinking, I screamed. That was a mistake. One of the monsters with no eyes and a super long tongue started running for my bedroom window. Not being a complete idiot, I ran to my dad's gun cabinet, which he always leaves unlocked, and grabbed his S.T.A.R.S. equipment. My dad is a starts operative on assignment in New York, leaving me home alone. I took out his Beretta 92F and got ready to shoot. Worried for my safety after my mother's tragic death at the hands of a mob boss, my dad had me take shooting classes and take self-defense lessons. I knew I could make the shot, and I did. An entire clip was emptied straight into what appeared to be its brain, courteous of me. The creature was dead. I had killed it. This was my first kill.

I equipped myself with two Beretta 92F's, stun grenades, a Taser, a knife, and a pair of walkie-talkies. Also, of course, lots of ammo. I looked like I was being sent off to a military academy. We had a Hummer in our garage that dad did not like to drive because he said it used up too much gasoline. Having good gas mileage was not exactly my top priority at that moment, so I grabbed the keys and got in and took off. The city was chaos. People were running and screaming and dying. I was thankful for surviving getting attacked. I turned the radio to the local radio station and heard that the city gates were closed and anyone remaining in the city was to go to their homes and stay put. I was not a rebellious teen, but I was not doing that. I preferred living.

I almost ran over a young woman in a small red dress. Without my consent, she dragged me out of the driver's seat and threw me on the ground. "Thanks kid. I'll plant you flowers," was all she said before she drove away. I could not believe someone stole my Hummer during this mess and that she was so calm about it. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a police car pull up. It was a police officer! The young that man must have just got out of the academy, got out of his car and looked around in awe. One of the monsters was at his feet and tried to attack him, but he shot it in the center of its head. He was a good shot. He looked at me and yelled, "Kid! Get in my car, we have to get moving!" Next thing I knew I was getting into his car, and we were driving away to who knows where.
