Jane twirled on the ball floor, smile stretching across her face. Loki, in the shadows watched her. Asgard finally had the wedding they were waiting for, between Thor and Jane Foster. Jane Odinson. Loki corrected himself.
Princess Jane Odinson, of Asgard and Midgard.
Loki set down his cup, and exited the hall. Going down the hallway, something dropped inside him. He felt something he hadn't felt in a long time.
Regret filled him. Of all emotions, regret plagued him.
Finally making it to his chambers, Loki slammed the door, and collapsed on the floor. Using his magic, the room became soundproof. The door locked, curtains drawn. Get it together, you're stronger than this. Emotion does not break the walls. She had no chance with you, ever. Get over it. He thought to himself. Memories flashed across his brain. Her, coming into the palace the first time, standing under the observatory, marveling at the millions of stars. Her finding him in the library, and asking him why he was alone. She spent hours talking to him, and him answering her questions. Last night, when she smiled at him across the dinner table.
It had been years since someone got him to smile back.
Returning back to the present, his walls finally crumbled. A sob resounded from deep in his chest, and tears slid down his face and onto his tunic. Lying on the floor, crying, was torture for him. Nothing could stop him. Questions ran through Loki's head rapidly. One final word pounded across his brain.
Why? Of everyone, why must I be cursed?
At that point, he lost it. Ridges firmed on his body, now blue. Scarlet flooded his eyes. He was truly a monster. In mind and soul.
Three to four hours later
"Loki? Are you ok?" Frigga called through the door.
"Loki? If you don't open up this door right now, I'm going to use my magic, and then it's even worse for you."
The locks clicked open. Frigga pushed open the doors gently, not knowing to was on the floor, his room destroyed. "Loki?" Coming to kneel in front of him, she saw that he was in Jotun form. Frigga was at a loss for words. Loki looked at her, and opened his mouth.
"Monsters may be created, but all these years, I wondered what made them so. Now I know. Nothing can be worse than what I am. I am a lost, forbidden, monster."
Tears formed in Frigga's eyes. "Loki. I am so sorry. More sorry than you would even dare to believe. But you are not a monster. No monster can admit that they are wrong. No monster can love that much."
He nodded his head.
"Fix your room and come back outside. Jane misses you."
Later that night, Loki entered the hall again. Jane pulled him aside, and whispered in his ear:
"You are not a monster."
He believed her.
