The steady, constant sound of the waves as they washed up on the stretch of shoreline were supposed to be calming; reassuring but that was not how they made Jethro Gibbs feel. Rather the stretch of sea before him made him realise how detached he was from everyone and everything. His team were getting by without him, Tony had settled into his shoes as lead agent and NCIS had stopped functioning just because he had quit, retired or whatever it was. Mexico seemed a whole other world away and although Jethro had been convinced that coming out here was the best thing to do, he was beginning to doubt him, he was even beginning to doubt his infamous gut.
He picked up the bottle of beer from the hole he had made for it in the sand. He took a long swig of the liquid, now warm from the hot sand. This should be enough for him, the beach, the beer and his boat but he felt like something was missing. He knew he would never get over the emptiness he felt about Shannon and Kelly's deaths but he needed something to fill the void. Rather, he needed someone to fill the gaping hole their deaths had left in his life and in his heart. Somehow his plan to find fulfilment in Mexico had fallen apart and he realised the one thing he needed to be complete was miles away, back in DC.
She had made him feel so much better before, after his failed marriages where he tried and failed to replace Shannon, she had helped him, loved him and fixed him. But like all of the other things in his life, that had fallen apart too and she had left him only to return as he lost one of his most prized agents.
Jethro looked out at the water again, the sun had started to set, lowering in the sky to reflect off the waves, the light so bright it nearly blinded him. He wondered if he should go back. Could he? Could he go back and confront all of them again after he had walked out. Would they welcome him back? Did they even need him anymore? Did she?
Jenny. Somehow it all came back to her. His amnesia had affected some of his memories of their time together but he remember most of it now, and he enjoyed reliving their experiences together but it hurt him to think it could never happen again. He wondered if it hurt her too, he could see in her eyes that she wasn't over him but she was his Director now and a relationship with her would be inappropriate. And who was to say it would work out this time if it hadn't before?
No, for now, he would just sit here and stare out to sea and contemplate what he had lost.
