"Damn it, this sucks," McKay whined, and Jennifer withheld a sigh, looking at all the sleeping kids spread out before them. There were a good number of homeless and orphans on the floor around them, and she still had trouble wrapping her head around that fact. Atlantis was about to get a lot of new faces, she thought to herself.
"McKay, it's not their fault-" Jennifer began to explain, and McKay surprised her.
"Oh, I know that. That's not what I'm talking about. No, it sucks that the wraith killed their parents. It sucks that there's a bunch of freaking kids battling wraith. It sucks that the only people in this galaxy even thinking about raising them is Atlantis. It sucks," He ranted, and Jennifer half smiled.
He really had changed, she thought to herself.
"Yeah," She agreed, nodding and looking them over. "But at least there's one city in the universe here that'll take them in. At least there's one set of people that are willing to fight to protect them. At least there's one group of people that are willing to do the right thing." She said softly, and McKay was quiet for a few long moments.
"I say it still sucks," He whispered under his breath to her, and she snorted and was about to respond when Sheppard's voice came to them over the radio.
"Hey, guys, ready to head out? Wraith's finally gone, and it seems as though it's all clear. DHD is back online, and Teyla's making sure that they aren't going to dial in and block us out again."
"Most of the kids are asleep, Colonel," Jennifer said in an anxious whisper. "I think the 'adventure' tired them all out. Even the teenagers are sleeping right now."
There was a heavy sigh over the radio.
"Okay. I suppose we'll let them sleep for a few hours, and then once they start waking up, we'll bring them to Atlantis and get them all sorted out." He said. "Guess it's another kiddie adventure, huh, McKay?" He said with a little chuckle.
"This isn't another kiddie adventure, Sheppard!" McKay snapped quietly into the radio. "This is a disaster waiting to happen! Just wait, when we get back to Atlantis, these kids are going to cause all sorts of problems with their genes and…"
Jennifer listened to them beginning to argue, feeling a sense of amusement as well as a sense of mother-hood stealing over her. It was like she was surrounded by children-even McKay and Sheppard were acting like it, the way they argued. She felt…rather old, compared to everyone here. With a small smile, she leaned against the wall of the cave and thought in amusement while listening to McKay beginning to complain to Sheppard,
Not another kiddie adventure indeed.
