Bart woke up in a drowsy state. His head was pounding and as he reached up to run his hands through his hair he felt a large bump at the back of his cranium.
What happened?
Had they been attacked? All he remembered was Super boy, Cassie, and Arsenal had walked in with Mongol's body. After that, everything had gone black.
He looked around and realized he was still in the Hangar bay, except now he was the only one there.
"Okay seriously, this is weird." He thought aloud, rubbing the large bump on the back of his head.
"Good to see you're finally up." He turned to see Karen (Bumblebee) walking over to him with her arms under her chest.
"What happened? We all came together and then everything went black. Were we attacked?" Bart asked, placing a hand on his hip.
Karen's gaze dropped, letting her arms fall to her hips.
"Yeah, we were." She replied bluntly. Bart's mind froze.
This was supposed to be a victory! Who had attacked the group?
"I don't understand, did someone come to get Mongol? Or was the hangar attacked? I mean, the place seems fine to me." He replied honestly, wanting an answer.
He noticed her gaze turn towards the hangar.
"Well…" She muttered.
"Come on, spill the beans already." The speedster moaned impatiently.
"I just don't know how you're going to take this." Karen admitted. Now Bart was just confused.
Why was she holding back?
Silence filled the room, and Bart was tempted to start tapping his foot.
"It was…" She trailed off, as if she had to muster even more courage to tell him.
Finally, after a couple of seconds (which felt like hours for Bart) she looked up at him and stared straight into his eyes.
"It was Blue Beetle" She said, her voice without a trace of emotion.
The world came crashing down around Bart.
"N-no." He felt his throat close up and he struggled to finish his sentence.
"No, he would never…" But he knew Blue would. He knew exactly what was happening now.
"He would never do that!" He found himself yelling. Karen only looked at the ground.
"I'm sorry Impulse, but it's true. He got you first; hit you in the back of the head with that object you guys got from Mongol's planet."
No…he couldn't believe what she was saying.
"After that, he just picked us off one by one with his sonic weapon." She continued.
Bart couldn't even look at her. He stared at the floor and let the tears fall.
Blue had hit him? Jaime had hit him?
He felt Karen's arms wrap around him and that didn't make him feel any better.
"I know you guys were close, I'm sorry Impulse." She said softly, rubbing circles around on his back with her palms.
Bart wasn't even paying attention.
I'll get you back Jaime. I won't let the same future happen.
He brushed away the memories of their dates a couple of weeks ago. It would have been their three month anniversary today, but they had been too busy saving the world to celebrate.
And now they probably never would.
