Song of Sorrow

Roaring skies and screaming wind,

Some fear within us all.

Contrasted with the spark of courage,

That none of us would fall.

As if on cue, as if a sign,

The Metal Beasts drew near.

Readying their spears of fire,

Their intentions clear.

"Let them come!" was what we said,

"Do not grant them mirth!"

"Send them back up to the skies,

To the world that they call Earth!"

I remember what happened next,

My memory is clear.

The flood that comes down from my eyes,

Is from the loss of what was dear.

We threw down the gauntlet, opened fire,

But our arrows rebounded off their hides.

Then the Metal Beasts let loose their weapons,

The fury of the skies.

Hometree soon began to fall,

Ashes filled the air.

We ran we screamed, we ceased to dream,

We fell into despair.

In every loss there are excuses,

The victors' truth you will deny.

But robbed of both our home and pride,

We could not sing a lie.

So while victory came to us,

Seized right in the end.

Do not forget our ancient home,

Or our fallen friends.

A/N

It's a bit strange in a sense-despite the deaths of many likeable characters in the film, it was actually the destruction of a tree that got to me the most. Maybe it's cause I'm a "tree hugging traitor" at heart but I guess the prelude to Hometree's destruction involved the facts that the viewer knows what's going to happen, what the na'vi are going to try and do to stop it and know that it's going to be for nothing even before the missiles start coming. And when they hit, the viewer gets hit as well.

Meh. Maybe I'm just trying to justify basic poetry. :P
