Her hatred for him had been largely unjustified. He had done his job, and done it well -- who else would have followed her so far and for so long? He had been diligent, dedicated to the point of obsession. He had probably had a family. Kids. He might have coached his son's baseball team.
Or he could have lived alone in a studio apartment with a cat and a refrigerator filled with Hungry Man frozen dinners.
Kate had never asked about the life he left to pursue her.
