Stronger
Peter wasn't willing to admit that the thought of battle scared him. But it really did. He knew the fate of Narnia rested with him.
I can't put myself through this... I'm not strong enough for battle., he thought, as his body began to shake with sobs. Aslan had believed in him. Everyone trusted him. But this was a strength he couldn't possess, a strength he'd never gain. He sank to his knees. Just then, Edmund entered the room.
"They're waiting on you, Peter. You've got to lead us."
"I can't, Edmund. I just can't."
Edmund noticed his brother's posture and knew what was going on. He finally found his voice.
"Aslan believed you could."
"Just because he believed it, it doesn't mean I can! All of Narnia's counting on me, Ed. You don't understand!",Peter screamed. Edmund fought back tears, and his voice began to shake.
"Yes, I do. You're afraid. Like I was when they rescued me. I didn't think I'd be forgiven so easily. You're stronger than you think, Peter." At this, Peter rose and looked into Edmund's eyes. He knew his brother was right. Aslan did believe in him. He'd been chosen to lead the army against the White Witch. Weakened by reality, Peter drew his sword and knelt with it, just as he had when Aslan knighted him.
Aslan, you believed in me. Please, make me stronger. . . let me win this, for Narnia. . . for you.
As if he'd summoned them by calling the lion's name, voices began to float around in the young soldier's head. One particular voice resonated there. It was the voice of Aslan.
"I all ready have, dear one. You just don't realize it yet. You'll see it when it's needed." A relief swept over Peter as he rose. Edmund looked at him quizzically, but decided not to ask questions.
"Yes, Ed, I'm fine. I just needed to face the reality of our victory." As if contented by this, Edmund left him, knowing his brother would catch up.
Thank you, Aslan. I am stronger, thanks to you. You're with us, I know it. I will win this for you and all of Narnia!
