best friends
means you get what you deserve

Olette and Hayner and Roxas and Pence.
Pence and Roxas and Hayner and Olette.

It used to always be them; when one was nearby, the others were soon to follow. Like puppies, they were fiercely protective of one another and always hurt when they didn't get along.

And then Roxas left, and nobody noticed except Olette, who couldn't understand why when she said his name, Hayner and Pence gave her blank looks, and why Roxas's parents didn't know who she was, and why it was like the whole world had forgotten about Roxas; the only evidence her memories, and even those were hazy, because she can't always remember everything. Parts of her memories are slowly blocking out, one by one, as if someone is going through her mind and methodically deleting things.

The world is large and confusing. Olette pretends that she is happy, content with her Roxas-less life, but really she is simply sick of all the stares she gets when she talks about the boy who no one remembers existed. And still her memories go, slowly, slowly, until all she is left with is his voice in her head and the thought that maybe she is crazy.

One day, long after she's finally moved past her memories, a brown haired boy shows up in their Usual Spot and she remembers all over again, because he looks just like Roxas aside from the brown hair and the blue eyes and the ready smile and everything; he's so different that she thinks he might be exactly the same. And she can feel herself slipping, trying to pretend that when the brown haired boy (Sora, she thinks) asks, she really doesn't know who Roxas is… why, that name is just so foreign to her.

And then one day she thinks she's gone insane. She's seeing him everywhere— halfway across the train station platform, in the shadows of the Usual Spot…

she is crazy

but

it really is him, here and now, and nobody remembers he used to be with them, before, and now he's just that new blonde kid who moved in down the street, even though Olette knows. And she's wondering whether she should be angry that he left them.

And nothing's the same.

She nearly breaks down the first time she tries to say 'hi' and he looks at her like she's crazy (which she is, didn't she already say?) for ever talking to him.

She nearly breaks down the first time he actually says 'hi' back, and keeps walking.

She nearly breaks down the first time he actually smiles.

After what seems like forever, they're suddenly friends, and she couldn't be happier. And they're spending time with each other, all the time. But Roxas, the new, slightly different Roxas, he doesn't like Hayner and Pence, and Olette finds herself drifting away from them, into a world that is simply Roxas.

And again she finds herself giving the illusion of happiness, because Roxas is so focused on only her, and this wasn't what she wants, nonono, she wants the old Roxas, the one who used to be so carefree, so happy, so not like this.

And so she takes the easy way out, trying desperately to leave, and that is the end of the pain that was Roxas.

best friends means I pull the trigger
best friends means you get. what. you. deserve.
