The house was quiet. Everything was silent, except for the low hum of the television in front of them.

"D'you think they'd mind?" Jacob asked her, muttering out of the corner of his mouth.

His hand inched towards hers.

She stared straight ahead at the movie playing.

"Trust me, they would mind."

The hand stopped on it's lonely path.

Nessie sighed.

The hand returned to the lap of it's owner.

"I'm sorry, Jacob. But you know how Aunt Rose can get, especially about...wolves." She grimaced slightly.

"I know, I know..." He muttered. "It'd just be nice, you know, to be able to hold my girlfriend's hand once in a while."

A small smile tugged at her lips.

"You know, they can hear you." She told him, her eyes following the somewhat handsome actor in the movie.

He stiffened for a moment.

Suddenly she reached up and touched his cheek, her eyes never leaving the screen.

His mind was flooded with her thoughts. He could see Bella, Edward, Rosalie, Emmet, Alice and Leah crowded behind the counter, set directly behind the T.V.- the perfect view of the screen, the couch, and both Jake and Nessie, plus whatever they might be doing.

He couldn't help the small groan that escaped him.

"This sucks." He moaned quietly.

"That would be an understatement." Nessie breathed. "They don't quite like you sitting so close to me."

"Sitting close to you?" Jacob asked in incredulously. His voice suddenly returned to normal volume. "I'm sitting five feet away from you!"

"And that is still not far enough." He heard Edward's voice say pleasantly.

Jacob swung around to face the little group gathered behind them, his face showing nothing but disbelief. But before he could speak, Alice spoke for him.

"Come now." She chided, her pixie face bright with mischief. "If you won't even let them hold hands now, how will you be able to deal with what they do...when they get married?"

If it were possible, Jacob would have sworn that Bella's face would have turned purple.

"Edward!" She screeched. "Has that mangy mutt been thinking of that with my daughter?" She took a step forward, bloodlust in her eyes.

"No." He admitted grudgingly. "Not as far as I can make out."

Emmet laughed loudly. "Considering the decade and a half it took you two to stop jumping each other every other second, I'd be thinking along the lines of 'hypocritical', eh, Jake?"

"Just let him try and get closer to Nessie." Rosalie said menacingly. "I'll rip out his eyes and feed them to him!"

"Don't even think about it, Blondie." Leah suddenly growled.

The kitchen had turned into a battle field.

"Now, now, none of that." Alice chimed, stepping between them faster than humanly possible. "Esme won't be pleased if you shred her favorite table."

"Forget the table, I'm going to shred her." Leah snarled.

"Try it, dog." Rosalie growled back. They crouched, ready to attack.

Jacob's hand slowly inched forward.

Nessie grinned, eyes still on the television.

Quick as a mongoose, he snatched up her hand and held it tightly.

Forgetting for a moment that he was in a house full of bloodthirsty vampires, he jumped up and crowed, "Yes! Finally!"

Every eye turned upon him.

"Oh dear..." Alice murmured.

Well, Jacob thought. Somethings were worth dying for.
