If you were here beside me
Instead of in New York
If the curve of you was curved on me
I'd tell you that I loved you
Before I even knew you
Cause I loved the simple thought of you
If our hearts are never broken
Well there's no joy in the mending
There's so much this hurt can teach us both
Though there's distance and there's silence
Your words have never left me
They're the prayer that I say every day.

The front door closed softly. She hadn't stood to even see Leo out. Her head pounded. Her body ached. Her heart throbbed. Nikki sat staring at the flowers Leo had brought her. He had never come to her house before like that. After she had gotten into one of her scrapes. Maybe he saw it as his duty now she thought bitterly. The clock on the wall mocked her with its loud ticking. Leo had only stayed twenty minutes. She pulled her dressing gown tightly around her her and tried to find distraction in her laptop. But it wouldn't come. The flowers sneered at her from the table.
Memories flashed hotly behind her eyelids. The heady scent of a different variety of flowers almost filled her nose. She could almost taste the curry. She still had a bottle of the same wine they had sipped.
Bastard.
The word came out of her mouth before she realised the thought had formed and she suppressed an angry sob.
Nikki stood and made her way somewhat unsteadily into the kitchen. She downed two painkillers and leaned against the countertop. Even the fridge mocked her on days like this.
She could feel the cold metal against her back again. She could almost feel the long rough fingers wound tightly around her wrist. She could almost smell the citrus and sandalwood of his aftershave.
Bastard. What had he been doing at that moment?. He would have already have accepted the professorship...was he considering finally having his way with her to close the book on their fantasy before he abandoned her for good?.
She wondered what would have happened if her phone hadn't shattered the blissful moment of silence between them. Would he have closed the gap between them?...or simply snatched the piece of nan bread from her hand and ran. And ran.
'Maybe I need to find a new place' she mused.
