A/N: and yet another oneshot. sad, yes.

She lay limp on the ice-cold ground. Her head lolling between her shoulders. It had been to fast! Why hadn't she noticed the black figure behind her? How was there no one to save her? Why couldn't she save herself? Why couldn't he save her in time?

Why?

Why?

Why?

The earth beneath her had dampened, not from the eerie mist which clung low, but from the spilt blood of her comrades and self. She was young, only 17 years of age. She was too young to die. With an effort the girl struggled to sit up against one of the many grave stones scattered throughout the yard.

It was the last battle between the forces of good and evil. The last confrontation of Harry Potter and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Harry insisted on fighting alone. 'I want you all to turn back. This is my fight and I must do it alone.' No one listened. They all had his back, even to death. As she could recall, 'We've had plenty of time to turn back.'

Beside her lay two bodies. The late Remus Lupin and Nymphadora Tonks. Both person's eyes contained nothing more than a blank glaze. A single tear dripped from each of her weary eyes. Tonks had died in Lupin's arms. They were the first to fall under the wand of the Dark Lord himself.

'At least they passed in love.' she thought bitterly. No one caught her when she fell.

"Lavender!" Ron rushed… passed her. He just PASSED her! The read-head took no heed of the barely breathing body but instead, arrived by Lavender Brown's side. Lavender hung unconscious, entwined in Ron's firm arms. Again and again he tried to bring her back.

Again and again tears fell from her face as she could only watch him with envy. That is, until she heard another voice.

"Ginny!" Harry screamed just as a red-headed girl collapsed only 30 feet away. With a violent yell he began shooting bright streaks of green from his wand. Screams engulfed the air accompanied by the thump of lifeless bodies coming into the contact with the soil.

Now it was her turn. Have you ever heard people say your life flashes in front of you before you go? It's true. Everything blurred and soon she was seeing things long forgotten.

Diagon Alley.

Hogwarts.

Mum and Dad.

Ron.

Harry…

Images continued to flow through her head. Her soul was fading and she knew it. The end was indeed near. Soon all light dissolved into darkness.

Another life was lost tonight.

Another soul claimed.

Another body touched the dirt with the softest audible thump, finally catching two boys' attention...

Hermione Granger was dead.
