She's shaking. Jasper is making every effort to calm her down, but he knows it's like bailing water out of a sinking ship with a teacup. What's worse is that he knows that he's also cracking up. If he lets Rosalie think that he's anything but in control of his emotions, he'll lose what little influence he has over her, and then they'll both be a mess.

"It's okay," he says, and he knows it's the worst thing to say to her because it isn't okay, but it's all he's got. His voice cracks and he thinks she can tell, because her expression changes.

Suddenly she's laughing, which isn't what he was expecting at all. The sound terrifies him, and suddenly he sees the diabolic grin behind the beautiful smile. He's always known that she was a killer, but now he knows that her past isn't that far away. Neither is his. He's felt the teeth tearing at his skin before, but now it's stronger than ever, and he finds it hard to believe that the sensation he's experiencing is the ghost of a memory. He swipes at the spots where he feels it the most, just in case it's real.

Then Rosalie laughs more. This time, she seems almost happy. "I'm sorry," she chokes. "You're- oh, God, Jasper- it's like you're swatting mosquitoes!"

He finds himself laughing with her, and he realizes that the pain is going away. Perhaps what he needed was to laugh. "I am," he says, "I'm swatting big ass mosquitoes!" He falls to the floor clutching his stomach.

"Big ass mosquitoes," Rosalie cries, "that sparkle!" This sets off another wave of laughter. Each one carries away another of Jasper's bad memories. He thinks maybe Rosalie is feeling the same way, but then she begins to cry, and suddenly he feels uneasy.

"The perfect Cullen family," she says bitterly between sobs. "They're so beautiful, aren't they? And each of them has a perfect match."

Jasper sort of wants to console her, but he doesn't know how she would react. It's likely that she wouldn't mind, but it's also unlikely that she would offer any words of comfort in return. He's a bit curious, too, because he's never seen a vampire cry, and he's always wanted to know if it was possible. There aren't any tears, just gasping, shuddering noises that would be accompanied by tears if Rosalie were human. He listens to the sounds for a while, then composes himself. His moment to be vulnerable is over. It's time for him to work his magic again.
