Spotlight
Artemis Fowl has been under the spotlight his entire life.
The first time Artemis was placed under the spotlight was when he was born. The media rejoiced at the prospect of having another subject who's reputation they could twists to feed their needs. His parents rejoiced at having a healthy son and heir. Artemis was too occupied with analyzing the world around him to feel any form of joy about his existence.
The second time Artemis Fowl was placed under the spotlight was when he was three years old. He had just completed a perfect replica of the DNA. Newspapers and magazines alike called him a prodigy. His parents were ecstatic. The prodigy himself was a bit annoyed by the fuss.
And the third time was when his father was lost in the great, heartless waters of the Arctic.
But the spotlight wasn't there for what happened next.
It wasn't there when he was became the first person to It wasn't there when his mother took to her bed, out of her mind. It wasn't there during the countless hours of futile searching for a world that did not exist.
And the spotlight did not know of his greatest achievements.
They did not know of how he had discovered the fairy world and kidnapped a fairy. They did not know of how he fulfilled his promise to his mother and reunited his family by rescuing his father from the Russian Mafia. They did not know how he saved his mother from the hands of a crazed being that, in the spotlight's eyes, did not exist. They did not know how he had sacrificed three years of his own life to save the lives of countless strangers.
Instead, the spotlight constructed its own tales behind his disappearance, not once showing sympathy to the worried family or what his fate truly was.
Artemis didn't care, but the spotlight continued to.
At the age of twenty, he was labeled "the most eligible bachelor in Ireland'. At the age of thirty, the spotlight labeled him a "has been". At the age of sixty, he was "crazy", or if the spotlight was feeling slightly kind, "eccentric."
And on his deathbed, he was labeled "one of the most brilliant minds in the world." The spotlight claimed "The entire nation will feel the loss."
But, Artemis did not care about the spotlight. He never had and he never would. What mattered most to him was what the people he was leaving behind.
What mattered were the grieving family members whose tears he could do nothing about. What mattered was the wife who he would never hold, never see, never love again. What mattered were the children he would not be there to watch grow any older.
What mattered was that life would go on.
But he would not be there to see it, to manipulate it, to live it.
The spotlight would change, choose another life to illuminate once his was extinguished.
But, his memory would never die for he would live on in the hearts on those who were his.
And the spotlight would live on in the life of another.
FIN
If you think the end is too OOC, please consider Arty's behavior in TTP. The boy cares about his family a lot. At least, that's the impression I got.
Please tell me your opinions please. Thanks.
