Last night, Donna dreamed of planets hanging in the sky.
She had this dream often, it must be her subconscious kicking her for missing it all, again. She had seen the news footage, she knew it must be real. Either it was real, or it was the most elaborate hoax ever concocted. And she'd missed everything.
Still, she didn't understand why this dream made her so sad. It was just a bunch of barmy planets.
And then it was one planet… no, a dust cloud in space. Swirling, dancing, condensing.
Make a life in the dust.
Why did she think that just now? Dust, stupid. If she found that much dust hanging about she'd fire her housekeeper.
She could hear the children running around downstairs. She really must stop lying in bed feeling sorry for herself. She has the perfect life. How many people win the lottery on their wedding night? And her husband, gorgeous, and adores her.
But sometimes she looks at him and expects to see someone else. A man with dark hair, and kind eyes. A man who is likewise gorgeous, adores her, but can hardly speak a word.
And sometimes, when she puts the children to bed, she sits in a chair in the corner, watching them sleep. Afraid to take her eyes off of them, she doesn't know why, but she's certain, for one brief moment, that if she closes her eyes they'll disappear. But that's probably normal for parents. Every mother has an irrational fear for the safety of their children.
They should take a vacation. Somewhere with a beach for the children to play, and some history.
Pompeii.
What was wrong with her? The children would have nightmares in Pompeii. Why would she ever want to go there anyway? Just a bunch of daft old ruins.
Epcot.
Yeah, that would be perfect. Educational but fun. Then they could hop over to Disney and let the children ride the spinning teacups, maybe meet Mickey Mouse.
Donna comes downstairs and finds her gorgeous husband making pancakes. She leans against him and watches the children dancing gleefully in front of a TV playing Blue's Clues. She really is happier than she ever thought she'd be.
A perfect life, in the dust.
