This is my first Home Improvement fanfic, so I hope everyone enjoys it. This is a one-shot based on the episode "Where there's a will, there's a way." I do not own any of the characters of Home Improvement. Please read and review.
"I promise nothing will happen to me Mark."
Dad promised me that. He hugged me and promised me that signing his will didn't mean he was going to die. I fell asleep after that, glad that Dad wasn't going to die because he was signing his will.
He didn't keep his word. I heard the phone ringing, but I didn't want to pick it up. Besides, Mom was working at the kitchen table on something and Brad and Randy were out in the back yard playing. I was reading my book.
I can tell something is wrong. She sounds upset. Her face when she answered the phone was different. Dad had been hurt on his cable show. I could tell this time it wasn't good. You see, Dad is always getting hurt but he's always better a day or two later.
This time is different. Mom got me, Randy and Brad in the car and we went to the hospital. I'm scared that Dad is going to die. He just signed his will. I knew he would die if he signed it. He said he wouldn't but he is going to die.
We are sitting in the waiting room at the hospital; Brad and Randy are acting all tough. I can see through them. They are hurting inside just like me.
Mom is sitting in the corner; she looks sick. I guess she is sick with worry. She isn't talking much. I did see her talking to the doctor, but she won't tell us what he said.
The doctor just came out and asked to speak to Mom. I know he is telling Mom that Dad died. What are we going to do without Dad? There is no one like him.
Mom came back into the room and just told us about Dad. He's not going to die! He had been in a car accident on the way home, not hurt on his cable show. The accident was bad, but Dad was going to get better.
Mom is taking us to see Dad now. We walk into the room. Dad is bruised and he has casts on, but he is okay! I'm standing back; Randy and Brad are talking to him.
Why is Mom taking Randy and Brad out of the room? I start to follow when Dad says, "Mark, come here for a moment."
I walk over to Dad. He has me climb onto the bed next to him.
"Mark, I know this had to make you think I was dying. Your mom told me that you had not said a word since she got the call that I had been hurt. I want you to know that this was not caused by signing the will. I am going to be okay. You have nothing to worry about Mark."
Dad pulled me next to him and held me. All I could say was, "I love you Dad. There's no one like you in the whole wide world."
I cried and Dad cried. Everything will be okay. Dad is going to be okay. Mom just came back in to get me. We have to go home.
"I'll be back Dad. I love you."
Dad held me for a minute before he said, "I love you Mark. Remember, you have nothing to worry about. I will never leave you guys."
