ONE FOR THE BOOKS
By: Vanessa Sgroi
"Sam! What're the numbers again?" Dean's deep voice was bordering on frantic as the giant ogre stomped closer and closer. Its gray skin glistened moistly in the moonlight, coarse hair bristling from nose and knuckles.
"Umm…" Sam clutched at his throbbing head. He'd had his bell rung not ten minutes ago by the very ogre now stalking Dean.
"Sammy, c'mon," Dean clicked his fingers, "what's the magic number?" The stench from the approaching beast enveloped him, and he gagged, slapping a hand over mouth and nose.
"It's…uhh…it's three…one…three one…" The stench reached Sam, tipping him over the edge of nausea. He paused to puke.
The ogre lumbered to Dean. It wrapped a tree-trunk arm around Dean, squeezed.
"SAM!" The plea erupted from Dean along with the air in his lungs.
"Three, one, three, one, six, zero, six zero, FIVE!"
As Sam bellowed the last number, Dean blew the enchanted powder at the ogre and watched with pleasure as it staggered back. It spun in a circle then turned to stone. Sneezing away the remnants of the powder, Dean wiped his hands on his jeans before hurrying back to where Sam slumped against a tree. "Well, that's one for the books."
