Just a short one-shot from Angela's POV.
This popped into my head a couple of days ago. I think it kind of says what all of us are feeling to a certain extent.
And, I'd just like to thank my friend Emily who knows nothing about Bones, but helped me fix it up anyway.
Angela Montenegro knew things were going to change. She knew that when everyone came back home to DC there'd be a shift. Their relationship would be altered. She had been waiting five years for this change. So, in fact, had everyone else who had ever seen Booth and Brennan in action.
They had this way to them, this fire. She'd never seen anything like it. They were polar opposites, yet they fit together so well, each a different side of a coin—but the same coin at that.
They opened up new worlds to each other, and throughout their partnership, they had both changed so much. Angela could see that when Booth and Brennan were together, they were at their best. It was obvious they loved each other. Painfully so. The fact that they risked their lives for each other screamed this.
The shift came, just as Angela expected. But boy, was it not the shift she was expecting. Who would have ever thought that Booth would go and find himself a girlfriend in the middle of a war?
Him and his damn hero complex.
She plopped down in a chair and wheeled herself across the lab, giving herself a better view of Brennan and Booth. She lightly hit her head on the table, sighing. She just didn't understand them. They were so damn different now. The magic was gone, but sometimes, there was the briefest spark that acted as clarification; proof that they were only themselves when they were around each other.
This was the first time in who knew how long that Booth was at the lab, and watching them now, you'd never know how they used to be. They were just finishing up with a case, and Booth looked like he had somewhere better to be, while Brennan looked uncomfortable.
She laughed at the thought. Brennan uncomfortable around Booth. The person she trusted the most. The very person she loved the most. It was, in a word, absurd. A year ago, when Booth stepped into a room, Brennan's face would light up. Her eyes would twinkle at the mention of his name. Around him, she was less of a sheltered scientist.
But Booth had changed. He'd fallen in love with another woman. He put her before his team. Before Brennan. He wasn't around as much. He lied to spend time with her. It seemed like he just didn't care anymore. Suddenly, he and Brennan were two different coins, and he didn't even realise it.
Everyone else did though. Even Brennan. And no one knew better than Angela that when it came to things like this, things concerning love, Brennan was freaking clueless.
But instead of smiling at the mere mention of Booth, her eyes filled up with pain. She was reverting back to her old self, slowly building her walls back up, layer by layer. She stayed late at the lab, running on little sleep, burying herself into their current case. A piece of Brennan had died.
Watching them from across the lab, the distance, the tension between them was visible. She could see how much just one simple work interaction between the two of them was hurting Brennan. And the pain in Brennan's eyes, which flashed across her face, was responsible for the constant pang that now resided in Angela Montenegro's chest.
She hated it. And as much as she loved Seeley Booth, she hated him too.
I hope you all enjoyed it!
Happy New Year, everyone.
