I only wish I owned Magic: the Gathering. As it is, I own the characters and some of the ideas here-in.
Sad as it is, I borrowed some ideas from Yu-gi-oh. I like the concepts, what can I say?
I'm also assuming you know what most of the cards and interactions I mention do. If not, the Magic: the Gathering homepage has a link to Gatherer, the sortable card database. It's an awesome tool that is really useful.
Deck? Check.
Paper and Pencil? Check.
Snacks and drinks? Check.
He was ready. Jared Myers had waited for this day for months. When he had first heard of the exclusive School of Magic long ago, he knew he would get in. Ever since, he had been preparing. Finally test day had come.
He just had to pick up a friend and find the test center. He could then begin working his way into the place of his dreams.
"Come on, Tomas." Tomas Jones, his best friend and playtest partner glanced up from the book he was reading and grinned.
"Gameday? Let's go."
He slung his dirty red backpack over his shoulder and stood up.
"It's finally here. I'm so completely jazzed. I can't wait. You think there's gonna be any girls there?"
Jared blinked, and then grinned. "Dude, we play Magic. Do you think there's going to be girls?"
Tomas shook his head sadly. "I figured it being the best day of our lives, girls would only be the cherry on top. Do you always have to crash my hopes that way?"
They continued their casual banter until they reached the testing center, a squat ugly building. The inside was almost pristine, however. Everything was well organized, with signs pointing the two of them to where they needed to go.
The approached the table where they saw a crowd. Sign-up table, they figured. When they finally got to the front of the crowd, their guess was confirmed. The lady behind the table smiled brightly.
"Are you here to test or play?"
They glanced at each other. "Test."
"Very well." She smiled again. "I should let you know of the special rules we have in effect. At the beginning of each game, you may search your deck for up to five lands and put them in play. In addition, you must use the gameboards we provide."
She nodded to the device on the table. "It has slots for all relevant game zones and has extendable zones in case you run out of room. There are also spots for you to put your library and graveyard. Got all that?"
They glanced at each other again. "Sure. Now what?"
She smiled and handed each of them a gameboard. "Go inside and find a tester. They will always start the game with the five lands in play. Good luck, gentlemen."
Inside the room behind the table were large fields where holographic images depicted creatures of all types flitting back and forth between players and other, stranger objects. They had little time to ogle, however, as a figure in a trench coat with a board slung over his arm approached them.
"More applicants?" While the words didn't seem very friendly, the tone lessened the blow. He seemed to have been testing new students all day.
"Yes sir."
He waved another coated figure over. "We will be administering your tests today. Match format, best two of three. We will begin when you are ready."
Jared grinned and stepped forward. "Let's go."
Not much of a start, I know. I should be writing for this fairly frequently, since Magic is something I have a deep passion for.
