This is my first story for Waterloo Road. I cried my eyes out after watching last night's episode about poor Sambuca, but it bothered me that the preview for next week showed Finn pulling away from her instead of being supportive. So I thought I'd write a short one shot on what I would like to happen after she revealed that she was dying. Hope you like it :)
Not Alone
As Tom looked on with tears in his eyes, and Sam and Rose held onto each other; Finn could barely move. He had just heard something that he didn't want to believe. But there it was, the truth evident in front of his eyes.
His girlfriend was dying.
He felt her eyes connecting with his again and found the strength to look at her. She was still sobbing out how sorry she was, but if he wasn't speechless right now he would have scooped her up and told her not to feel that way. As if she was burdening him with this bombshell.
"I'm sorry Finn. I'm sorry..."
In his head, he was screaming out that it couldn't be true. Part of him wanted to run away, to escape everything just like he'd tried to do a few years before. Only this time, he wouldn't be running away from his own problems. He would be running from the girl he loved. The girl who needed him.
He wasn't going to do that.
"Sam..." he choked out, clambering to his feet. He didn't know what he was going to do when he got there, but he took the steps towards her anyway.
Tom could see the heartbreak in the young lad's eyes, and he watched as Finn made his way over to Sambuca. He himself looked upon the girl as a daughter, and it broke his heart to know that she had no future.
Sam collapsed into her boyfriend's arms and let out her breath as she clung to him. But it was when she realised that he was sobbing into her shoulder that she began to cry again too.
It was all Rose could do to let herself sit there and absorb the devastating sight before her. Her daughter; her little girl, having to come to terms with the fact that her life was going to be over soon. She couldn't even fathom it herself.
She hadn't even had the chance to live yet – she was only seventeen. How could life be so cruel?
"I'll just...I'll just be in the other room," Tom said quietly, struggling to hold in his emotions. At that, Rose began to follow him into the kitchen, placing a comforting hand on her daughter's shoulder on the way out. She knew that what her Sam needed most at this moment was for Finn to be there for her.
The young couple managed to guide themselves to the sofa to sit together, and Sam took a moment to wipe her eyes and calm down.
Finn took a deep breath to say something, but Sam got in before he could.
"I don't expect you to have to go through this with me, it wouldn't be fair..."
"Sam," Finn cut in. "I'm not...I'm not leaving you. Look I know I can be an idiot sometimes, and I'm not the world's greatest boyfriend. But I love you."
"I love you too Finn," she answered.
He looked at her, thinking how well she looked in spite of what was coming. It just wasn't fair. She was the best person he'd ever known, and he was still a waste of space in comparison. Truth be told, he didn't know what she had seen in him. And now she was the one being taken away before her time.
"I don't want to die, Finn..." whispered Sam, all ideas of bravery flying out the window now as she told him just how scared she was.
He only wished he could give her a solution to her fear. But he could do nothing. Nothing except promise to be there.
"You won't be alone," he told her gently. And this was the moment in which Finn Sharkey found himself finally growing up.
