Brian, Lily, Meghan and Tara were asleep in the RV, parked at the campsite. Brian lay with Lily pressed up against him, and Tara lying beside Lily. Meghan lay in the single bed by herself, clutching her stuffed pig to her chest. It seemed to be a peaceful night, which was rare, nowadays, but all four were thankful for the silence.
Meghan began tossing and turning in her cot, which broke the silence, and she clutched at her stuffed pig, tightly. At first she was only muttering, but soon she began crying out, her words growing louder, each time she spoke them
"No... No, Brian! ...Brian!" She wailed, thrashing about.
Her cries woke Brian, and he jolted upright. It took him a moment to realise what was going on, before he rushed to the little girls side, kneeling by her bed. He shook her, gently, calling out to her, careful not to wake Lily and Tara. "Meghan, I'm right here. C'mon, wake up, everythin's fine!"
This was enough to wake her, and she too jolted upright. She was gasping, terrified from what she'd dreamt of. She simply looked up at Brian in silence for several long moments. Then, she suddenly leaned forward, and wrapped her little arms around his neck, and buried her face in his shoulder, silently. Brian was at first surprised by this, but he took the little girl into his arms, nonetheless. He did as he used to do to Penny when she was upset, and rubbed small circles in the small of her back. Small sobs shook her tiny body as the two embraced in silence for what felt like ages, and soon Meghan had begun to calm down.
Brian pulled away, first, but the little girl only clung tighter to him. He couldn't help but smile at that. "Wanna talk 'bout it?" He asked softly, before he moved two fingers beneath her chin, lifting her head so she'd look at him. His blue-grey eye searched hers for an answer, or any sign of what'd happened.
Meghan tilted her head back down, blonde locks moving to hide her face, again, and Brian allowed it, this time. "I had a nightmare..." She managed, quietly, before she went on, "And... You were dead..." With that, she moved forward again, and buried her face in his shoulder. The man she had come to see as her father - more of a father than her biological father ever was - was alive and well, and this came as a great relief to her.
Brian sighed softly, at that, and he placed his arms around her, again. "I'm not dyin' anytime soon, Meghan. Cross my heart."
"You hafta pinky swear, too." Meghan suddenly added softly, tilting her head to peek up at him again.
He lifted his hand in response, and held his pinky out to her. "I pinky swear, punkin'." The word came out accidentally, and Brian was about to correct himself, but Meghan didn't seem to mind it. He decided to let it slide.
The girl looked at his hand, before she touched her pinky to his. The silence between the two carried out for awhile, before she spoke up, again. "I love you... Daddy."
