Fair Question

Pairings: House/Cam

Spoilers: Set after Role Model.

A/N: I almost cried when she left. I almost don't like reading fan fiction because I know what happens next.

Have you completely lost your mind?

It was a fair question. One that most people asked. He was beginning to ask himself.

Cameron was getting to him more and more each moment he spent with her. She was annoying. Like a little mosquito that wouldn't go, no matter how much you swatted at it.

She irritated him. That's not really saying anything, though, as most people irritated him.

What annoyed him most, though, was that she was beginning to stand up to him. He used to think of her as someone without a backbone. She'd definitely used up every vertebrae in her spine on him.

Especially that time that he'd got himself into a messy situation, by asking her exactly why she liked him.

Talk about embarrassing; he'd been forced to leave her standing there, waiting for a reply to her harsh question. He'd glanced over his shoulder before he left, and seen her sigh. He made himself scarce before she could turn and see him watching her.

It was almost painful to talk to her; he never knew whether she would be mellow, and take everything in her stride, or send back a nasty retort. She definitely wouldn't just put up with him any more.

He missed the quiet Cameron, who would let him say anything to her, keeping her mouth shut, looking serenely at the floor.

Cameron had found the advantages in speaking her mind. House respected her, more than he liked to admit.

He would never say it, but all those comments - the ones that, said by anyone else, would be taken as a compliment – he meant every one.

So he was asking himself the same question, as he walked up the steps. Ringing the doorbell, it reverberated around his head.

Yes. The answer was yes. He was completely out of his mind.

The door opened.

"House?"

It came out more of a plea, than an order, as he had wanted it to.

"Come home."
