The Waltz.

It was the Hogwarts Yule ball and the Marauders sauntered into the great hall each of them sporting a date. All except one, James Potter, he looked around the hall expectantly and his heart sank slightly.

"Don't worry Prongs it will all work out." Sirius reassured him with a mischievous wink. Remus smiled, his thin face lighting up and Peter gave him thumbs up. James sighed and was about to run his had through his already messed up hair, when he caught himself. No he had to get out of that habit - Lilly hated it when he done that.

The Great Hall was beautifully decorated, as it was every Christmas the walls were charmed into ice and the magical ceiling had been altered to constantly snow. Of course it melted before it could land upon the Great Hall's occupants. Suddenly the hall truly became more beautiful to James. A young woman wearing a beautiful teal dress had just entered the room. Tightly fitted down to her waist the dress was dusted with glitter and from there fabric had been left to compliment her natural curves, cascading all the way to the floor it was pulled into grouped areas ruffling the fabric giving it a constant sense of movement. Lily Evans was standing tall, with her head held high, her hair falling in beautiful crimson waves down to her waist. She was the embodiment of grace and James felt his knees go weak.

James stood there stunned by her beauty, he felt as if he were falling in love with her all over again. He took one brave step forward and froze. How could he approach her? Looking at how beautiful she was compared to him, with his scruffy hair and ancient glasses. His heart was deflating and his stomach twisted. When, suddenly he was grabbed roughly from behind and pushed towards the expectant red head, she was scanning the crowd looking for James. Twisting his head around James saw Sirius pushing him toward Lily who spotted them and smiled softly James smiled back and stepped away from Sirius and toward Lily. Looking back at Sirius he smiled and nodded his thanks. Sirius merely winked and sauntered away beginning to dance very dramatically and stupidly to the current song.

James shook his head at his best friends' antics and turned back to Lily and offered his hand to her, "Why miss Evans, you look utterly magical." Lilly laughed softly at her date's joke and accepted his hand. Together they walked walked to the dance floor. Once in the waltz position they moved slowly and perfectly to the music. " James…" Lily stared off, but James put a finger to her lips gazing at her lovingly. She understood, no words were needed, and put her head on his shoulder and just let him take the lead.

The three marauders currently watching the scene all smiled as one. Things were going really well. Sirius was acting out the scene next to Remus and Peter as though he were willing James to do as he was doing.

Years later it was the first anniversary of Voldemort's defeat and Remus watched a scene very similar to the one he has witnessed between James and Lily on that christmas eve all those years ago, remembering how James had vowed on the spot that night that he was going to marry Lily. Remus smiled softly.

As the music stopped Remus watched Harry and Ginny break apart and silently heard Sirius' voice in the back of his head "What is it with Potters and red heads?"
