I Met Anne Frank in 2003
1. the summer of laying flat on the lawn like snow angels and watching his mom swig a bottle of Zinfandel on the front porch. The white paint chips off the house like old skin. This summer is like the way Caesar died: over and over and over again. Heat rising in waves over the grass.
2. brain like an animal caught in a trap, willing to gnaw off its own femur to survive. In the mirror I swallow and digest blood. She knocks thrice and the wailing stops.
3. a list of things that will traumatize me. We run out of things to talk about. Overturn rocks to find messages from Kronos in the dirt.
4. sometimes you're the bird and sometimes you're the cage.
5. you laugh like you know annihilation. You laugh like you have seen nihilism. Jaws wider than vultures; teeth sharper than God. You are sitting on the kitchen counter, fingers tap tap tapping on the marble.
6. my little sister says the towels that hang on back of the door look like ghosts when the lights are turned off. What a relief it is to stop doing the things that make us human and still be called by our names. My sister says the saddest things.
7. missed call from Joan of Arc at 3:06 am.
8. this is the closest you will ever be to hell. Being with you is the farthest I've ever been from hell.
9. a vulture with good intentions is still a vulture.
10. forget what it feels like to be prey and become the thing that devours. Remember what it means to be the antagonist of your own plot. It doesn't really matter; human and doomed, you must suffer nonetheless.
10.9. letter from father: he says the earth will dissolve like snow. If not yours then mine.
taken from chapter 2 of BOYS.
