Standing on the train platform Narnia was the only thing on 21 year old Peter Pevensie's mind. The thought of Narnia brought a whole flood of questions and feelings back to him. Narnia was that one place, "a dream of a dream" as his youngest sister, Lucy, called it, where he didn't feel like stupid old Peter Pevensie of Finchley. In Narnia he was Peter the Magnificent, the high king of Narnia. His siblings had ruled with him and they got along. It was all thanks to that magical wardrobe at the Professor's.
He feared that his time ruling as a king never actually happened. Sometimes he felt like the eldest of his younger sisters, Susan and believed that Narnia had existed, but deep down in his heart he knew, although he might not say it as openly as Lucy would, that that magical land and The Great Lion were real. The time he had spent in Narnia was real and he was a king. Peter smiled and went back to sleep
The times that he spent with Aunt Polly, Professor Kirke, his brother Edmund, Lucy, his cousin Eustace, and Eustace's friend Jill helped with these feelings. At least once in their lifetimes they had been in Narnia. They would get together and talk about Narnia to help keep it real. Susan never came. She cared more about boys and clothes and landing a good husband now. She had fallen away. Sometimes Peter wanted to shake her and make her believe, but he never did.
At the last meeting of the Friends of Narnia, as Lucy had nicknamed them something extraordinary happened. What seemed to be a Narnia ghost appeared to them pleading for their help. Professor Kirke told them about the magic rings buried at his childhood home and Peter and Edmund left early to get them. Now he was standing waiting to pick everyone up and to see Eustace and Jill, the two youngest and the only two who have not been told they can go to Narnia again off. He stood on the platform as he saw the train coming. He didn't feel anything when it hit and killed him.
Suddenly he was there back in his Narnia clothes. He was Peter the Magnificent again. He had to fight another battle for Narnia. When it was over Aslan, the Great Lion destroyed Narnia and brought them all to a new Narnia. Peter was the one who shut the door on the old world. As he went further up and farther in he saw people he knew from when he ruled and people he had heard about when talking with the Friends of Narnia. It seemed like everyone was here. His parents were even in a New London!
When Peter reached his throne at Cair Paravel and realized that only 3 were going to be filled on that glorious day he realized that his deepest fear was never that Narnia and Aslan were childhood games. His darkest fear was that he couldn't enough to make Susan believe and because of that he would never again see the sibling that kept him sane as he looked out for the younger ones.
