Joubert read the newspaper. A rather small article on page four caught his attention. He read it twice, rocked back in his chair, poured himself a drink. Read the article once more.
"JUNIOR!", he finally barked.
Junior, of course, was all boyish smiles and innocence when he walked into his office.
"Anything you'd like to tell me?"
The young man shrugged. "Yesterday's job went down fine."
"What about the one last week?"
"Went down fine, too, didn't it? Client sent Scottish Whiskey as bonus."
Joubert pushed the newspaper article towards him. Junior glanced at the headline
MURDER CONCEALED AS SUICIDE DISCOVERED
...and shrugged again.
"Here's what I think happened: You got into the target's apartment and found him dangling from the ceiling. EVERYONE else would have walked off and cashed in on dumb luck. You, however, took a closer look, discovered that he hadn't hanged himself and had nothing better to do then go looking for the perpetrator. And to top it all off YOU DELIVERED HIM TO THE POLICE! INCLUDING EVIDENCE!
"Where's the harm?", Junior asked innocently.
"You're working the case in Siberia. With Walker. Get the hell out of here!"
Shocked about this sudden breakdown in civility, Junior stomped out of the office. Siberia meant low payment and Walker was an idiot.
"What the hell is your problem?", he yelled before slamming the door shut behind him.
"The problem is", Joubert thought as he poured himself a stiff one, "that you tried to fight the good fight. This time you went against someone else. How much longer till you go against yourself?"
He downed the drink in one go.
"And against me?"
