She tried to roll over and in her mid night grogginess forgot about the cast on her broken leg. The sharp pain reminded her instantly and her gasp roused her companion.
"You okay? Do you need those pills?"
"No, just trying to get comfortable."
"Can I help…need a pillow…?"
"How'd you do it?"
"What? Oh well first of all I had excellent first aide."
"Oh God Jack, I'm so sorry. I…"
"Hey stop that… You're probably the reason I had seven more years in the field. Anyway I don't remember much. They had me drugged to the gills and after that it was just awkward."
"I was thinking"
"Yeah" She could hear the smile in his voice.
"You do remember talking to me when I set your leg?"
"Oh yeah" No smile
"I knew it hurt but I didn't, not really. You told me about Sara."
"I told you I don't remember everything."
"I was jealous."
The humor returned to his voice. "Of what…the broken leg or the internal injuries?"
She went on as though he hadn't spoken
"You had had something I wanted – someone to come home to, someone who loved you. I was jealous of her, too."
He was quiet for a time.
"If you had known the mess I made of things, the last thing you would have done was be jealous of Sara. You would have felt sorry for her. I can't say I'll never screw this up, god I hope I don't." He took her in his arms. "Sam, you have someone to come home to. You have someone who loves you more than life itself."
