Mel and George sat on the couch together, sipping glasses of Red Wine. They had run into one another while they were both out on a business dinner, and Mel had invited him back to her place to catch up.
George looked around the room and sat his glass down. "So, you and Joe finally get together or what?" he asked, causing Mel to choke on her wine.
"What? No, me and Joe?" she asked with a laugh. "No." she said as she shook her head and sat her glass on the table.
George raised his brows. "Wow, ok." He said. "That seemed like a bit of an overreaction." He said with a chuckle.
Mel frowned and shook her head. "No, it's just…Joe and I?" she shook her head again. "That's not gonna happen, we're just not a good fit that way."
George raised a brow. "Mel, do you remember that music box I gave you?"
Mel nodded. "Of course I do, I love it."
George looked a little sheepish. "That was all Joe." He said.
"Are you serious?" Mel asked, and George nodded. "Completely." He said.
He looked at his watch and sighed. "I've got to go; I have an early flight out in the morning." He reached over and grabbed her hand. "Don't forget to let yourself be happy ok? Don't miss out on something great just because you're scared of what might or might not happen." He said with a squeeze of her hand. He stood up and she walked him out.
Mel had just sat down at the kitchen table, her music box on the surface in front of her, when Joe walked through the back door.
"Hey Burk, I got that cheese you like." He said, holding up a grocery bag.
Mel smiled a little. "Thanks." She said.
Joe put a few things away before sitting down beside her at the table. He noticed the box and raised his brows. "So ah…what's going on?" he asked.
"I ran into George tonight, he came over for a while and we talked. About a lot of things." She said. Joe nodded. "That's nice." He said.
Mel lifted the lid to the music box and listened for a moment. "Do you remember what I said when he gave this to me?"
Joe nodded and cleared his throat. "Yeah, something about the person who could think to give you that would have to be the one. Or something like that." He said. "What's this about Mel? Are you regretting letting him go?" he asked in one of their rare moments of complete sincerity.
Mel shook her head. "No." she said looking up at Joe. "I wasn't thinking about him at all anymore." She said, surprising him.
"I'm going to bed, I'll see you in the morning Longo." She said.
Mel went to bed then like she said. She left him sitting in the kitchen, looking at the music box she left sitting on the table. She left him with the unmistakable knowledge that she knew the box was his idea. She left him wondering if he should follow her up those stairs.
Joe left the music box sitting on the table as he followed her trail up the stairs.
