A/N- Hey, it's theeShadyLady here with a new story. I really don't have anything to say that wasn't in the summary, except the actual story.
((DISCLAIMER: I do not own The Hunger Games.))
The Apples Ate the Cheese
"Hey? Hey!" whispers Apple 1.
"What?" answers Apple 2.
"The humans, they're gone."
"So?" Apple 2 snorts.
"Are you hungry?"
"Yes! I haven't eaten since we were separated from the trees."
"Well, take a look at those delicious looking berries over there. I doubt the humans would notice if we ate a few of them..." Apple 1 says slowly rolling towards the little round berries.
"No! We're Nightlock!" cry the berries in unison, but the apples don't react to this statement. "That means we're poisonous!" The berries plead.
Both apples scoff at this, unsure of what to do next.
"They're right," giggles Apple 2 suddenly, "but no one said anything about the cheese..."
The two apples roll quickly towards the cheese (the cheese being a processed food isn't able to protest.) But just as they are about to take a few bites of the delectable cheese, a new human quietly sneaks up to the small group of foods.
Apple 1 spots her first and since everyone knows that humans and the members of the edible species aren't supposed to interact (except for the purpose of the edibles being eaten by the humans) the apple once again becomes silent and become immobile. Noticing this the other apple and the berries follow suit.
The new human surveys the area nearby and then crouches on the ground eyeing the little bundle of cheese. As she stretches out her arm to snatch it Apple 1 realizes it's time to make a choice, stay silent and let the vile new human take their food or speak up. "No, that's ours!"
"What?!" the new human whispers, looking around for the owner of the voice.
"Down here!"
"Talking fruit? ...Only in the Hunger Games, I guess." The human girl seems unaffected by this revelation.
"The cheese is ours," Apple 2 impatiently speaks up now, "but we don't really want the berries, them being so closely related to us and all. So you can have them." (The berries don't scream because they hate all humans and so they are happy about what they have just been volunteered to do.)
"Thanks," the new human smiles, grabs a handful of berries, and runs back in the direction she came from. She is seemingly unaware of the peril that she has just willingly brought upon herself.
"Cheese!" Apple 2 exclaims acting oblivious to the fact that someone's life is about to end.
This exclamation is enough to make Apple 1 forget about the human as well. Both apples then commence eating the cheese that they feel is rightfully theirs. However after only a few bites they again have to freeze because they notice the crabby human girl and the boy who brought the berries are back. The two humans are arguing about signals and other things that neither of the apples understand.
*"And you ate without me!" the crabby human is still upset.
*"What? No, I didn't," the other human is confused and is making up some excuse.
*"Oh, and I suppose the apples ate the cheese."
She's on to us! Apple 2 is in a panic. Act natural... well, you are natural... continue being natural!
Before either apple can react to the comment made by the crabby girl, a cannon shot rings out scaring both apples (and the humans) causing them to jump, but luckily the ground shakes and disguises this fact.
The remaining berries snicker quietly amongst themselves as the two humans try to figure out what happened.
