A/N: Probably my favorite song from Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is My Eyes. I think it perfectly shows Dr. Horrible's complex character and his feelings. In the beginning, he shows his villain side, the side that sees the falsehood that is society, the side that isn't quite whole yet due to a small part of his heart that still aches for the possibility of good (Penny). During the chorus, he lets his Billy side show, the side that is longing for Penny and is mourning the fact that she seems to be falling for Captain Hammer.

Anyways; I've always felt so inspired by this song and it's deeper meanings, so I decided to write a little narration on what Dr. Horrible would be thinking at the time. I was particularly hit with the feels by the line inspiring the title:

"Listen close to everybody's hearts

and hear that breaking sound.

Hopes and dreams are shattering apart,

and crashing to the ground."

Enjoy the angst.

Despicable.

Absolutely despicable.

Dr. Horrible pushed his inner commentary aside as he made it a point to sneer at a child on the other side of the sidewalk. The evil side of him took delight in the glimpse of fear the child displayed on its small face. Something deep within gave a small pang, but the villain simply pulled his hoodie closer to himself and thought nothing of it.

Stupid kid. Psh. Kids. So afraid of people like me, people who are just enough to show the evil within, when they should be afraid of the corrupt leaders who unjustly hide their evil behind layers of insanity and lies. One day they'll see… they'll all see…

His inner ramblings had been rising in frequency ever since that fateful Wonderflonium incident. It infuriated Billy – uh, I mean, Dr. Horrible – that humanity was so ignorant that they couldn't see past the facades of the many so called 'heroes'. Especially Penny…

Why do I even bother waiting to unleash my master plans? I should just pull a Bad Horse and poison everyone out of nowhere. Would anyone even care?

Dr. Horrible turned the dark corner only to see the warm glow of Caring Hands Soup Kitchen.

Would Penny care?

He saw a group of homeless men huddled around a fire and couldn't help but smirk. These men very well could go into the cheery soup kitchen and give in to the sickly-sweet normalcy of human helping human. They're all just like me. They've been crushed, broken, and lied to far too many times to fall for the fake hospitality and goodness.

The villain approached the window of the shelter and felt that small pang once more as he saw Penny sitting at a table with none other than Captain Hammer. For one brief moment, Billy let himself be upset. He silently cursed the world for being so full of false senses of hope, for letting him believe that Penny would be the one to finally see through his nemesis.

The more he gazed upon Penny fawning over his enemy, the greater the pang grew in Billy's heart. Shaking his head, Dr. Horrible backed into the darkness, towards the familiar broken souls behind him and farther away from the pain that came with the light.

This is despicable. I can't let this affect me. This is what happens when you try to trust in good…

Dr. Horrible steeled himself and walked away even from the somber light of the homeless men, entering the chilling darkness while coming to a final resolution.

Evil is the only way.

Evil is on the rise.
