Valerie looked out at the sky. The stars seemed to sparkle around the moon. It looked so peaceful. Until Phantom flew by. She reached for her gun, but she wasn't in the mood. She sighed.

"What do you want, Phantom?" She spat.

"Val- I mean- Uh... Ya know, I never heard your name. It's usually 'Shoot first socialize never'. What do you want me to call you?"

She stared at him.

"Never mind. Anyway, what's up? You seem... Less deadly..."

" Today is the anniversary of- Wait. Why am I telling you?" Valerie spat. She reached for her gun.

"WOAH!" Phantom jumped. "Hey, this is improvement! We talked for 45 seconds without you shooting! NEW RECORD!"

Valerie stared."... ok?" 'Boys will be boys.' She thought.

"So, why so glumpy?"

She stared. "... Glumpy?"

"Yea Glumpy. So why?"

"... *sigh* Well... When I was younger I had a favorite pup at my dad's lab. You know, the one you destroyed?"

She paused and waited for the usual 'I DIDN'T DO IT!' but Phantom just sat there and looked interested.

"So anyway, I named him Cujo."

Phantom jumped. "Did- did you say Cujo?"

"Yea... Why?"

"Uhh... Why Cujo?"

"It was the first name I thought of. Anyway, he was a small pup, runt of the litter. Always wanted to hang with the big dogs. But he was so cute and clumsy, I just loved him to pieces. My dad got him, and everyone said he wouldn't be a good dog. Even my dad believed them. But I told him, 'Trust me, he's the one.' And he was.
'One day, I came home from school. I put him in his cage earlier because he peed on my clothes. But when I got back, police sirens were going off. I ran past them and up the stairs. His cage was empty. And the apartment was a wreck. I was tearing up, and I felt a hand on my shoulder.
'It was a Police man. 'Is this your place?' I nodded. 'It was almost robbed. We caught the man though.' ' Wha- what happened to Cujo?' 'The dog? I'm sorry... He put up a good fight... The guy shot him, but the little guy stayed with us until we caught the man... I'm so sorry... But trust me, he's in a better place' He left me to drowned in my misery. I- I just couldn't believe it. My dog- my Cujo, he just left like that.
' My last words were, 'You bad dog! Now I stink! I gotta go to school, so get in the cage!' I never knew that- that someone can just- just- Go. You know what I mean?"

Valerie asked. She looked up. Phantom's eyes seemed glazed over.

"Phantom?"

"Huh?"

She glared. "I TOLD YOU MY STORY, MY PAINFUL STORY, AND YOU IGNORED IT?" She grabbed at her gun.

"NO NO NO! NOT AT ALL! It's just, Cujo reminds me of a dog I know. Hold on."

He flew away.

Valerie sat there. 'I just told one of the most tragic moments of my life, to my worst enemy... What kind of hunter am I?'

"Back." Phantom flew in and whistled.

"CUJO!"

Valerie froze as a giant green dog came bounding in. He had teeth the size of fists, and eyes as red as blood.

"Cujo, meet huntress. Huntress, Cujo."

The dog growled. Valerie gripped her gun tighter.

"Put the gun down." Phantom said.

"And why should I?" She spat.

"Just trust me." The words echoed in her mind.

'Just trust me Daddy, he's the one.' 10 year old Valerie echoed in her mind.

'Trust me'

The gun dropped with a clang.

The dog's growl softened, and he slowly shrank. Soon, all that was left was a cute green puppy with bright red eyes like fire. He slowly walked to her, yipped, then cuddled in her arms.

She froze, then slowly said, "... Cujo?"

Cujo yipped, and lick her face.

"CUJO!" She hugged him tight. Tears streaked down her face. It had been so long... So long...

"See? He ISN'T my dog. He just wanted his squeaky toy!" Phantom smirked.

"Yea... He's mine... My Cujo..." She smiled.
