Closer to Heaven
Esme danced under the full moon. She twirled, she dipped, and she dreamed in the night air. She dreamed of not being so plain, of not feeling like a little girl when she wanted so badly to be a woman. She dreamed of being able to wear fancy ball gowns and pretty jewelery, not old raggedy skirts and aprons. But most importantly, she dreamed about a love she would find one day that could last forever.
She climbed a tree with this hope in her heart, maybe if she could get closer to the sky, she could find heaven.
But she fell when she tried to reach heaven.
The night gave way to morning when they found her on the ground, in tears beneath a rising sun. She cried all the way to the hospital. She was set on top of a bed and her parents both kissed her on the cheek, telling her to be brave for the doctor. Then he came into the room, and her world was turned upside down. He looked like a vision, with his blond hair blowing in the wind that came through the open windows. His eyes were richer than gold and his face was so beautiful she thought there was no way this man could be real. He was the answer to her wishes and hopes and prayers, and only one word from him sealed her heart to his.
"Hello there," he said when he saw her. She couldn't speak in return, she was so taken with his eyes. If his eyes were like gold, then his voice was like silver.
"Hello," she responded at last, only because she didn't want him to think her odd.
"What is your name?" he asked. She was surprised that he sounded genuinely curious. No one spoke to her like that before.
"Esme," she whispered. She hoped he could hear her above the noise in the hospital.
"Esme," he repeated, with a smile. "What a pretty name." She blushed like a rose and turned away from him. She gasped when he touched her shoulder and said in a deep voice "You can call me Carlisle."
With Carlisle's help, Esme was able to walk again, and thus, dance again.
The next time Esme danced under the moon, she imagined her blond angel dancing with her.
She didn't need to climb a tree to get closer to heaven.
Please review if you love Esme and Carlisle!
