--- It was near midnight. After midnight was a day Gaara despised. It was Gaara's birthday.
Gaara stood beside a tree, his head hung down and his face cold as always. It was always like this on his birthday.
No one would wish him happy birthday, no one would celebrate it with him. He was just alone.
His siblings knew it was his birthday. They greeted him, of course. But they greeted him with a stuttering voice, instead of a celebrating one.
Temari and Kankurou knew every year was miserable. Everybody was afraid of him. It wasn't his fault.
It wasn't his fault he was like this.
Where ever he went people kept a distance from him, trying to not get killed.
The wind howled softly against the cool, night air. He's hair swayed along with it.
He sighed. Why wasn't he normal like the other kids? Why did he have to have a demon in him? He clutched his head, he hated everyone. He could love no one, except himself.
Footsteps bothered his thoughts and his hands fell to his sides. A girl came out. A pink haired girl with bright green eyes.
His eyes widened for a split moment, she was that girl with the Uzumaki and Uchiha boys. Why is she here? He thought.
He was about to ask her, but she spoke up, "I got lost. My team mates and I were on a mission.. but.. I lost track." She started to sniff, "They were too fast. I've been lost for hours."
Gaara remained silent.
Her eyes widened with fear, "I'm sorry. I-i should get going." She wanted to walk away but she felt like her feet were glued to the ground.
She looked up at him. Her body relaxed. Her eyes met his and she felt slightly relieved she was with him. Finally, Gaara spoke.
"Could.. could you stay?" He asked with no emotion, "It's my birthday and.. no one's here to celebrate it with me."
Sakura's eyes softened.
"Don't pity me," he said. "If you can't stay, go right ahead."
Sakura blinked. Then she smiled brightly, "Gaara-san, I'll stay. I should atleast wait till sunrise. It's far too dangerous for me to travel at this time, anyway."
She scooted over to him and leaned against the tree. After a few minutes, he knew it had already turned midnight.
He was officially 13 years old. Suddenly he heard something. He turned his head to Sakura, she was singing softly.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you.." Sakura's eyes were closed while she was singing.
Gaara could feel liquid in his eyes.
Tears?
Tears. He hadn't cried for years. Sakura opened her eyes to be greeted by a hug. She blinked.
Then she hugged him back and whispered, "Happy birthday to you, Gaara-kun."
Starting now, he probably won't despise this day anymore. But find it, a complete blessing.
