"I never liked 'Alloween much," said Scabior, twisting his wand between his fingers in the darkening twilight. He and Greyback were sat on a log, a fire crackling in front of them, awaiting the return of the other Snatchers, who had gone to get supplies from the village. The moon was bright, but not yet full. Bats' wings were beginning to rustle in the trees overhead, and every so often an owl would hoot, making Scabior give a little start, and hop a little closer to Greyback, which seemed to agitate him.
"Give it a rest," said Greyback. "It's no different than any other night of the year."
"I know, but it's all spooky and shit," said Scabior. Greyback gave him an unimpressed look. "Cold, too."
"That why you're sitting so close to me?"
"It is, yeah."
"Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact you have nightmares?"
"Nightmares? What're you talkin' about, I don't 'ave nightmares..." Scabior snorted and looked at his wand, which was emitting pathetic bronze sparks.
"Yes, you do; I hear you talking in your sleep."
"Come off it..."
"About vampires and banshees."
Scabior said nothing.
"But you muttered something about a guard dog."
Scabior smirked. "Yeah, that's probably you."
"You think I'll protect you from the monsters, do you?" said Greyback in a mock baby voice, his growl of a voice sounding amused.
"Dunno. 'Sat what I said?"
"It is."
"Then yeah. You 'ave to look out for me. You're meant to be in charge."
There was a pause, then Greyback rasped, "Exceptionally handsome, and charming."
"Said that while I was sleepin', did I?"
"You did, yeah."
"Must've been talkin' about myself."
"No, no, it was definitely me. 'Greyback,' you said, 'Greyback is the most handsome and charming werewolf I have ever met, and what's more, he is very strong and very scary and I need him to protect me from all of the monsters because I'm scared to go outside alone on Halloween.'"
"That's very specific."
"You're much more eloquent asleep than you are awake."
Scabior suddenly realised how close the two of them had gotten, and that he was grinning like a fool, and it was moments like these, when the two of them were alone, that he really did sometimes think Greyback would protect him, if it ever came down to it. For Greyback's arm was wrapped around the small of his back, and Scabior felt safe and warm.
And then the other Snatchers came back and Greyback returned to keeping his distance from them and communicating in grunts and snarls.
