"Life doesn't hurt until you think about how much things have changed, who you've lost along the way, and how much of it was your fault."

Chapter 1:

I took a long breath as I looked up at the ceiling with a smile. I looked at the countless pictures pined to the ceiling of my room. I have a thing for photography, always have. My theory is I believe that a picture can capture more than a moment in time or a memory but rather an emotion or feeling. A moment comes and goes, that's just life, but when I look at a picture the emotion from that very moment seems to lasts. My smile slowly turned into a depressing frown as I realized that I was leaving my room along with my photos. I finally stood up after staring at my ceiling for a good five minutes and walked out of my room. I took one last look inside before I shut my door and continued down the hall.

I felt numb, like this was all a dream, like I wasn't really leaving. But unfortunately, this was not a dream; this was far from a dream. As I began to walk out the front door, I was stopped by a tug on my hand. I turned around to see my mother staring at me intensely with blood-shot eyes, she had been crying again. I gave my mother a reassuring hug letting her know that things would be ok. I could feel a warm tear drip from her cheek and onto my bear shoulder. I hated to see her cry; she always managed to make me feel guilty even if I had done nothing wrong. But this time I did do something, something that has changed my family forever. I let my mother hold me for a while not bothering to break free. When she finally let me go I gave her a goodbye and turned to walk to my aunt's car. I stopped right before opening the passenger door to look at my mother one last time. Tears dripping down her face, she forced a smile and lipped "I love you". I also forced a smile then proceeded to open the car door.

I let out a small sigh as I slipped into my seat and stared out the windshield to look at my house. I have been in this house since the day I was born. I had taken my first steps in that house, spoke my first words, learned the good parts of life and learned to deal with the bad. I had never left our small town of Lakeview for a long period of time, but that would soon change. I was on my way to live with my aunt for the school year. It wouldn't be such a big deal to me if Springwood wasn't four hours away! As my aunt began driving down the road, she started to clear her throat.

"Grace, everything will be fine. This year will fly by and we'll have a good time." She said with a grin reaching across her face.

I gave my aunt a false smile and turned to face the window. As we drove by, we past a sign saying "come again soon" and at that very moment I knew that I would not be coming home for a long while.
