A Second Chance

Katniss sat there on the bed in the victors village thinking about all the lives lost in the war that they just won. Well, she doesn't quite agree that they won, she felt as if she had lost everything. And that everything was Prim. She was all Katniss thought about any more, Peeta could barely pull her from her thoughts anymore. Everything went so wrong, it wasn't supposed to have happened like that! Why did someone as innocent as Prim have to go? The most respectful, admirable, amazing person she had ever encountered in her time here on Earth.

All of the sudden Peeta walks in and says "Haymitch is here to see you, says it's important." Katniss wipes her nose and says "I'll be down in a few seconds.", "Fine.".Ever since Katniss started to drift, Peeta has been more and more curt with her. What was she supposed to do? It wasn't her fault the things that she loved had been ripped away from her! And she didn't understand why Peeta was being that way... If she could have anything it would be to just go back to the Reaping and destroy the little ticket with Prim's name on it, that started this whole mess. Better yet go back before that and destroy Snow!

"Katniss!" she heard Haymitch grumble from downstairs. "Uuugh..." she grumbled. "I'm coming, I'm goming!" She hops off her bed, checks her face in the mirror, and runs down the stairs sees Haymitch, and mumbles "What do you want?" "I have got to talk to you." he says, surprisingly sober. "Spit it out." she bites back. "Not here. Follow me." he snaps. Haymitch walks out the door, and out into the street. Katniss notices that the weather is beautiful, it annoys her. "Funny how the weather can be so ironic." Katniss grumbles, "How so? It's beautiful." he says wonderingly. "I'm depressed and the birds are chirping, the sun is shining, there's a warm summer breeze. Mother nature is just really confused." "Mother Nature is trying to remind us of brighter days Katniss, you can't live in the past. It's killing you." Katniss didn't need that from Haymitch, she already knew it was.

"Haymitch where are we going?" katniss moaned. "Doesn't matter." he replies. "The h-" Haymitch cuts her off, "We are going to a place to remember." The mystery of this statement hushed Katniss, though her mind was going a mile a minute. A place to remember? what is he talking about? I don't know if this is good or bad... suddenly she glimpses the remains of the seam. Katniss stops, stock still. "Why did you bring me here?" she asks while grimacing. "To remind you of the things that you loved, the people you loved. Katniss you know they would want you to move on." haymitch says. "I can't, it's too hard." Reluctantly she takes a step towards the ruins the war left her house in. As she reaches where the door used to stand she collapses into a heap. No crying or screaming, she's done that enough to know it doesn't help. Nothing helps. All there is, is silence. Haymitch cautiously walks up beside her and helps her up. he says, "Katniss there is a time to mourn, and there is a time to live, it's time you started living again. You can't let the grief swallow you up, although God knows it feels right. Prim would have wanted you to be happy."
