Insanity

It had to be insanity. What other explanation was there for the fact that Fanny Fulbrite, and elite member of the illustrious TND, could be sitting in a booth opposite the one and only Hoagie Pennywhistle Gilligan, on a date. Even more, she was wearing a dress: an emerald green, backless, halter dress. What's worse? It was prom night, a night she was supposed to remember as one of the best in her life. Thankfully, Hoagie had rented a tux: sleek black with golden cuffs, a crisp white shirt, and a silk emerald tie to match her dress, rather than wear the powder blue, ruffled disaster he called a tux.

It had been decided that she, Hoagie, Nigel, Abby, Rachel, Patton, Kuki and Wally would go to Ritchie's, a popular teen restaurant, before riding to prom in the limo they had each pitched in for.

It had to be insanity. There was no other way she could be laughing at one of Gilligan's jokes. Admittedly, they (like his appearance) had gotten much better over the years. He was beginning to learn the difference between puns that no one enjoyed and jokes that were actually, dare she even think it, funny. People, especially those of the female persuasion, were beginning to take notice.

It had to be insanity. She was dancing with Hoagie, to a slow song no less. She had been planning on sitting at the table all night and mingling with her TND friends (her temper had also improved, and her hatred of boys in general had narrowed to a select few) when he had the gall to hold out his hand and ask her to dance. Her original thought was to turn him down gently, but then she saw that look in his eye, the little spark of hope that propelled her to say yes. She grudgingly obliged, which was how she ended up in his arms.

Fanny slapped his restless hands away from her bum for the umpteenth time, and once again he smiled sheepishly. She shook her head and rolled her eyes, fighting the smile begging to blossom across her face.

It had to be insanity. She was kissing Hoagie Gilligan, right there in the middle of the dance floor. She didn't quite understand how it happened, it just did. She remembered them dancing, and suddenly their faces were getting closer. She could feel his breath on her face, somehow minty fresh, and she felt her own breath hitch before their lips met. And boy, could he kiss. He was just about to deepen it when their hated teacher, Mrs. Macsuga, pulled them apart. Well, she attempted to, but Hoagie just wrapped his arms more soundly around Fanny.

"Both of you, detention for the next week for Public Displays of Affection and for direct disobedience of a teacher!" she roared. Hoagie waved a hand of affirmation in her general direction before returning his full attention to the redhead attached to his lips.

Mrs. Macsuga huffed and walked away, throwing her hands up in to the air and admitting defeat. Hoagie and Fanny broke apart for a moment to smile at each other before Hoagie took her hand and led them both to a more secluded area of the school.
