A Midnight Game
Your feet pound at the uneven earth floor, the towering trees loom around you. The branches grab and scratch at you, pulling you, slowing you. You can hear the heavy breathing behind you. Glowing eyes blink at you from the blackened underbrush around you, with their sharp, pointed fangs gnashing. Your heart is pounding, your blood is rushing. A twig snaps behind you, they're close on your trail. The moonlight is blocked by the trees high canopy. You see a few, dimly twinkling stars ahead. A clearing. Your legs are throbbing and feel like jelly, your throat is soar, your heart might explode any moment, and your eyes are tired and burning. You allow a smile to spread across your face through it all. You got away, you lost them? You're free. The small stream that runs through the clearing trickles a quiet greeting. An owl nearby flutters its wings with a gentle hoot. The soft forest noises around you, serenity at its purest. Then there it is. The deep, heavy breathing. There, right behind you. You turn, he's there. He's found you, you're trapped. His hand darts out at you. Time slows, your heartbeat thunders, he's closer. Your frozen still, there's no where to go. He's got you now. His hand makes contact, your heart stops. His hand is gone and he shouts out...
"TAG, YOU'RE IT!"
