Chapter 1

"The night is still young." The man murmured, leading her towards the grand ballroom.

"That's right." Lyn answered with a sly grin, moving aside to stop his greasy arms from coiling around her waist. "So you'll have to wait."

With a wink, she headed outside to the balcony.

Men. The night is still young, and I'm tired of you already.

Unfortunately, it was not her cue to leave yet. Tall, defined, and undoubtedly the most beautiful woman in the entire mansion, Lyn could have won the hearts of everyone in the masquerade, but she did not come here to dance.

Her posh midnight blue dress and butterfly mask: borrowed from a rich young lady in the changing room. Dark silk gloves laced with gold: misplaced by the waiter. Two diamond earrings: those weren't very easy to take, so she swiped a pair from a shop she dropped by. Invitation to the masquerade: forged with excellent penmanship.

That's right. Lyn is a thief. Her focus tonight was none other than the necklace in display at the center of the lobby: the Crescent Moon. Unlike other jewelry, it wasn't made out of gold or diamonds, but a crude, hard metal. However, it had the ability to capture one's attention the moment they laid their eyes on it. Rumors said that even in the darkest of nights, the Crescent Moon can sparkle on its own.

Lyn, of course, didn't believe in such myths that defies the laws of logic and science. The necklace, though, will fetch a good price. More importantly, the Shirogane family announced to the press about their "unstoppable security" at the masquerade? Proud and patronizing in nature, Lyn couldn't wait to see their faces when they discovered that their treasure was taken.

A good thief is not only talented, but also cautious. The price and promised thrill were all too good to be true. She declined five clients' offers to prepare for tonight. It took months, so many plans, replans, and backup plans that their code names covered five times the alphabets.

But soon, it will be worth it.

She turned around and walked back inside. As if it was synchronized with her footstep, the mansion fell into a sea of darkness. The mansion's backup electricity switched on a few seconds later. On a count of five.

One.

"Huh? What's going on?" The guests murmured.

Two.

"We have discovered unauthorized personnel in this mansion. Everyone, please calmly evacuate to the grand ballroom as we locate the unauthorized personnel. Doors will be locking in a few minutes."

"Unauthorized personnel? This is outrageous."

"It's probably thieves for the Crescent Moon."

"That makes sense."

Three.

Lyn walked up to one of the waiters.

"Excuse me. I think. . . I may have left one of my earrings in the lobby. Can I quickly go get them?"

"I'm sorry, miss. But the doors are already locked. If we open them, the thief may escape."

"The thief?! Then my earring will be stolen, too! Please, please. They're our family's heirloom. My mother will have my head if she finds out that I lost them!"

"I'm sorry-"

"Maybe you can get it for me? No one will leave if you guys are facilitating the entrance. Please. It will only take a minute."

"Miss. . ."

"What is the matter here?" A masked men approached the waiter and Lyn. Although he looked like he was in his late teens, the young man carried an aura of authority around him. This must be Ryou Shirogane, the younger Shirogane brothers.

"This lady misplaced one of the earrings in the lobby."

"Ah. I'm afraid we can't help you."

"Please! This is of utmost urgency!"

"I am deeply sorry. We will compensate for your loss if it was not found after this."

Lyn's face crumpled and she walked back towards the balcony, looking hopeless. Just kidding.

Four.

Suddenly, a sharp noise sounded through the announcement. The chandelier in the ballroom flickered out, combined with the sound of shattered glass. Lyn was gone.

Five.

"Stop." A voice sounded behind Lyn. The shuffling of footsteps coming behind her. The bodyguards and Ryou approached Lyn.

"Phantom thief." Ryou remarked. "I should have known you would come."

"Too late." Lyn smirked, waving the necklace in her hands. "Then you should have prepared better."

Pulling a cape over her head, she prepared to leap out of the broken window, when she noticed the large cylindrical contraption at the center of the room.

Now that I think about it. This room looks like a. . . lab? Fascinating.

She walked towards the contraption. Ryou flinched at the sound of her footsteps.

"Don't go over there!" He cried out. "Stop!"

Lyn frowned. She never liked it when people told her not to do something. Like a child, she took a step forward defiantly, enjoying the look of horror on the young Shirogan's face. Suddenly, beams of light shot up around her, enveloping her completely.

Oh dear.

That was her last thought before everything around her turned black.

Author's Corner:

Hi guys. I am OneShotAway, the author of this story. Disclaimer: Ryou is not Lyn's main love interest. I repeat: he is not her freaking main love interest, okay? He may or may not be the second love interest, though. You guys can ship them if you want, but don't expect them to get together.

Have questions or comments about the story so far? I will answer them in the Q&A section for my following chapters.

Example Question:

Q: Why are you so amazing, OneShot-chan?

A: I just am. *flips hair*

That's all for this chapter. Thanks for reading and stay tuned!
