Title: Five Times Jim and Asuka's Eyes Never Met
Word Count: 500
Rated: PG-13
Romance: Jim x Asuka
Summary: Five times, the South School Champion and the Queen of Obelisk Blue's eyes did not meet...but should have.
Jim Cook had only one eye, but it was a deep kind blue that warmed Asuka's soul when she first saw him that day. She wondered what had happened to the other one, and if she'd ever know him well enough to ask. It was possible; they were going to be there for most of the coming year after all. Jim himself looked up at the students for his new school, and spied one lovely blonde girl with warm amber eyes that spoke of intelligence and strength. He smiled; she was quite the sight to welcome him to Duel Academia.
The wall fell away and created an exit out of this liquid nightmare. Asuka's first thought was that she could finally reach the air. Her second was that it was Jim who had come for her, and she reached for him gladly, her gaze lifting from the fear-filled contemplation of her approaching death to see the concern in his eye. Together they headed up towards air and freedom, and hopefully some kind of an answer to all of this. Asuka knew in the deepest parts of her soul that she'd never been happier to see someone in her entire life.
Everything depended on all of them now. They had to get Juudai to where he would duel Martin, or whatever Martin had become, or whatever it was. Asuka jumped back as she caught sight of XYZ Dragon Cannon behind her, and started to motion Cyber Angel Dakini to do something. Before she could, Jim's familiar Paleozoic Fossil Dragon Skullgoth appeared, blowing Manjoume's monster away. She looked up towards him as he tipped his hat towards her, and smiled warmly. There was still a long way to go, but that moment glowed in her heart for quite a while to come.
Asuka. Tomorrow Girl. Jim placed her duel disk on the mound between the ones for Fubuki and Manjoume, certain that was where she would want it to be. He looked at the deck still firmly in the disk, but didn't take it out. He wanted a memento that would recall those warm eyes and strong spirit, but he couldn't bring himself to take even one of the cards there. He thought of those last moments, and wished he'd caught her eye. It may not have done anything, but at least she would have seen him, instead of grief and terror.
His breath was warm on her lips as they looked at each other. Asuka had once said that she only loved dueling, and at that time, it had been true. But this was a different time, and there were other words on her lips that were not spoken. There was no need, as she gazed into his eye and he returned the look with a smile as warm as life itself. She did not know which of them moved forward, only that one of them had, and she lost sight of his eye in the richness of their lips together.
The End
