Disclaimer: I am not J. K. Rowling. I do not own Harry Potter.
Note: Just a quick little near drabble on a moment where canon could have gone differently.
Further Note: The first couple of sentences, running from 'Harry thought' through to 'new wand?', are quoted from the 'Bathilda's Secret' chapter of the UK edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
…Harry thought of Ollivander, kidnapped and held hostage by Voldemort, of Gregorovitch, who was dead. How was he supposed to find himself a new wand?
And then, suddenly, memory stirred, offering him a faint glimmer of hope.
"Hagrid!" Harry snapped his fingers. "Hagrid can repair wands, Hermione! They broke his wand when they expelled him from school, but he somehow used the pieces in that umbrella of his, and he can still do magic with it! We have to go back to Hogwarts, Hermione, and get to see Hagrid, somehow!"
Hermione opened her mouth, to apparently object, then frowned and changed her mind.
"We shouldn't risk going into Hogwarts, Harry, but maybe we could get a message to Hagrid somehow, and arrange to meet him in Hogsmeade…"
Author Notes:
Starting in canon with the moment that Rubeus Hagrid takes Harry into the wand shop in Diagon Alley, it's thrust into canon Harry's face at several points over the years that his friend, Hagrid, had his wand snapped. It's also made clear to Harry that apparently Hagrid reassembled the pieces and continues to use them still. It's something of a surprise to me that Harry, when he has a problem (a broken wand), doesn't at once therefore think of his big friend and that Hagrid might be able to mend it. True, it's possible that Hagrid might have had help from someone else (such as Dumbledore), and that he might not be able to fix Harry's wand by himself, but it's not as if Harry and Hermione's hunt for horcruxes is going anywhere at all at that point, and given the way that things generally have been going at that moment in canon it seems to me that Harry ought to jump at the thought of sneaking a visit to see Hagrid; especially given how important Harry's wand might seem in the light of the way that in the battle in the night sky over Surrey it seemed capable of beating Voldemort on its own.
Anyway, if anyone else wants to take this idea and explore some of the possibilities, I'd be interested to hear. I don't currently have the time or resources to take this one any further.
