Part 1 of 2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In a crowed nightclub, filled to the brim with humanity, a lone spectator
watched as techo-style music pumped though the speakers, creating a
dreamlike effect. The patrons of this club moved as one being. They pulsed
and throbbed to a beat that existed in all of them. The beat of a heat,
thudding and pulsating as it pushed blood though the beast's veins, the
sound of lungs pulled in air all at the same time, the sound bodies moving
among one another, trying to become one with the others, trying to lose
themselves in the haze that surrounded them.
Spike loved it.
Spike loved watching as humans tried to evolve, try to become more that they
were. He was addicted to the life that grew with each passing moment. And
the stench of death that followed it's passing, lingering upon the fringes,
ready to attack and pull down a victim just like a tiger following a herd of
wild animals. He stood there, unmoving, as if he was carved from the finest
marble. Black shirt, red over-shirt, black jeans, black army boots all
coved with his trademark duster. Pale skin and even paler hair, blue icy
eyes and high cheek bones, he cut a striking figure.
He was Death.
Demon in a human suit, he ruled the night. The darkness his kingdom, the
living his toys.
And he was feeling hungry.
His eyes roamed the crowd, searching for a meal, a likely victim. Something
or someone who would not be missed. But they all looked the same. Mindless
droids moving to a beat. A generation crying out to different from all
others. And all they had done was force clone after clone. All wearing the
same clothes, all wearing the same attitude. Spike had just made up his mind
to leave when she walked in the door. He paused, taking time to study her.
And he knew he had found what he wanted.
Different.
To any human looking at her, they would have shook their head and mumbled
'victim. But Spike saw the beast contained under the surface. She wasn't a
demon, she wasn't a vampire. Nothing supernatural controlling her.
She was just a predator.
Sliver and black sneakers, black sweats, black sweater. She obviously knew
the three rules of predators: don't have anything they can grab, don't have
any bare skin and don't stand out. These tricks worked on the prey only.
Real predators could see another coming a mile away. Pale skin, white hair
and red eyes, she was an albino. And Spike watched those bloody eyes as the
searched the room, looking for it's own victim.
And their eyes met.
She recognized him, his stance, the way he held himself. And she mouthed one
word before she stepped back out the door.
"Fight."
Spike threw some money on the counter and walked through the crowd. All
stepped out of his way, they had unconsciously recognized the challenge. Two
predators wanting to test themselves. Only one would return to the hazy bar.
Only one.
