Winter sunlight filtered through the windows of Kakeru Manabe's middle school. Kakeru was propped up against the wall, playing with his cell phone, when a message appeared on the screen:
-Kakeru,
I'm going to a meeting after work today. It may run late into the night, so could you possibly stay at a friend's house until I get home? It would put my mind at ease to know you were safe. Sorry for the short notice.
Love you,
Mom –
"Aww, great! Of all the times to have a meeting! I have so much homework!-"
"Hey, Kakeru!"
The brown-eyed boy looked up to see who had called out to him. A boy, a little older than himself, with short, silver hair was walking towards him, waving. Yuki Sohma was dressed in the navy school uniform and black shoes. His white tie was a little crooked.
"Hey, Yun-yun! What's up?"
Yuki shrugged, "Not much. What about you?"
"Well, mom has a meeting after work, so she asked me to stay at a friend's house until she gets back. I don't see why she wouldn't trust me…"
"I can," Yuki said without the slightest hint of emotion.
"Aww, c'mon Yun-yun! I thought we were pals! You're supposed to support me in times like this. This is when-"
"But you're welcome to stay at my place until your mom gets home," Yuki cut short Manabe's ranting with a smile, "It wouldn't be the first time we've had house guests."
--
Kakeru let his backpack fall to the floor with a sigh. "Thanks again, Yun-yun. I owe ya' one!"
"It's no problem, really. Shigure's fine with it, and you won't be staying that long, anyways."
"So what're you planning for this weekend, Yun-yun?"
"Well, I might do a little gardening, while Kyo's gone. I might go check on Machi, too; how's she been lately?"
"Mmm, she hasn't changed," Kakeru shrugged, "Why do you ask?"
Yuki sighed and walked over to the frosted window. A light snow was beginning to fall. "I don't know…
"She's like a pristine looking glass,
Polished, gleaming to
Perfection."
A look of understanding crossed Kakeru's face. He added his voice to the song:
'Not a spot may remain,
Or her fragile soul
May break.'
Yuki looked up with surprise, but kept singing.
"Everyone ignores her,
As she yearns for
Their attention."
'Someone reach out and
Save her, before it gets too
Late…'
Kakeru walked over to stand next to his friend. The two of them see a family walking down the street; a child and her parents. The trio turns the corner and disappears from sight.
'All her life they've called her 'nothing,'
Now she starts to
Disappear.'
"She locks her true self deep inside,
And hides within her
Doubts."
'She can't stay like this forever,
Her time is drawing
Near.'
"I just hope that I can reach her,
Before the sand
Runs out…"
The snow is falling thickly, now, and the lawn is blanketed in ac crisp white. A single set of footprints is visible, and their owner is walking in a zigzag towards the house. Yuki smiles.
"She's Perfect 'cause
She isn't.
She's fragile, yet so
Strong!"
'If only they could see
Her,
Then they'd know that
They were
Wrong…'
As Manabe finished, he looked around for Yuki. Seeing the open door, he sighed audibly. "Aww, man! I wanted to embarrass Yun-yun about liking Machi! Oh, well…"
He turned back to the window in time to see two sets of footprints in the snow, leading away from the house.
