The phone rang and i went to get it. "Detective Murdoch speaking." i say.
"William you need to come home." Julia cried over the phone.
"Why is something wrong?" she wasn't far along enough to go into labour, and she hung up the phone before i finished my question.
"Sir, i have to go see to something at home." i say to the inspector as i grab my hat and coat. I leave before he can respond, taking my bike, hoping whatever it was julia was upset about wasn't about the baby she was carrying.
I arrive at the hotel and run up the stairs to my room. The door was open and i rush inside. The sound of Julia crying came from the living room, and i look over to see her crumpled on the floor. She looks up at me, her face red and tear stained.
"I'm so sorry William" she starts,
"I lost the baby." she sobs. I collapse beside her, rocking her gently in my arms.
"It's okay." I repeat hoping to calm her. Slowly her sobs turned to whimpers and we sat there on the floor,
silent tears of remorse splashing on the carpet.
