I looked up into the night sky. What am I doing here? I asked myself. What was the point in breaking ME out of jail?

I watched the water swirl around my naked body, not knowing where it will end up. I let myself be pulled with the water, wishing I could go too.

Extra ripples caught my attention. I looked up to find white, bare skin shining in the moon light. I kept my eyes on Lily as she walked into the cold water.

'Look at you strutting out here. Jiggle-tit and all', I laughed.

Most white people would rather die than share the same water as me. And frankly, I wish they would.

I watched as Lily pushed against the current towards me. The pain of the cold water was clear as day in her eyes. 'I'm sorry', she whispered.

'I know,' I said, 'me too.' I reached out my hand and gently patted her knees. You could still see the scares from the 'Martha Whites' on her knees. The horrible things white men do to children would make anyone with a kind heart, want to cry.

I looked down the creek, out into the darkness.

I don't know how long I stayed in that spot.

Lily was asleep on the side of the bank. Her small face seemed calm. I haven't seen her so calm since her mother's death. She had suffered so much in her short life.

I heaped some kudzu vines into a mound, soft enough for a bed. Lily was so peaceful; I didn't want to wake her. I gently lifted her light body onto the bed I made. Just like baby Jesus, she did not wake from her deep sleep. I sat next to her, watching her breaths go in and out. Who new such a small creature could have such a big heart.

I gazed up at the sky. 'Good lord,' I said, hoping some unseen angel could hear. 'Please help us on Lily's journey.'

As expected, the only reply was the whisper of the wind.
