For as long as he could remember, there was heat. A warmth that slipped through his clothes and melted against his skin. It was rare that he was bothered by a hot day, but the cold was another matter.
He could never get used to the rare freezing spells that hit California occasionally. Unfortunately, Japan did not have "freezing spells".
He gritted his teeth together in frustration as he recalled his oyaji's parting words, his voice laughing as he teased him for not being man enough to brave "a little cold".
At least he had gotten his revenge for that comment. He smirked behind his scarf as he remembered his father's cries of sorrow and pain as his mother ran after him with her broom, whacking him over the head as she berated him.
It was (sort of) worth the insult to his masculinity.
A sudden breeze blew past him, breaking his chain of thought as he huddled further into his clothes, trying without success to escape the cold chill sweeping through him. He dug his gloved fingers further into his pockets as he walked faster, scowling at the distance he still had to walk.
Houses gradually became small stores as he trudged forward with a dark air. The streets steadily became more crowded with people as they frantically dashed in and out of stores, their faces harried at the small amount of time left.
It only made him scowl further when he remembered why these people were rushing around so frantically. He stopped for a second to draw his scarf up higher then started walking again, narrowly escaping a crash with a nearby pedestrian, her eyes barely noticeable over her armload of packages.
He breathed a soft sigh of relief when he finally reached a familiar storefront. Reaching out, he drew back the door...
"Surprise!"
He felt hands on his arms as he was forcefully drawn into the sushi shop. He landed with a thump on the ground as the door closed, shutting out the bitter (hated) winter night behind him.
Cautiously, he looked up.
"Happy Birthday Echizen-kun!"
His senpai-tachi were before him, all laughing and smiling as they held out presents. He felt a smirk cross his face as he accepted Momo's hand, letting him pull him into the welcoming group.
"Arigato minna," he said as he let himself relax into a (brief) smile. He looked back up, a smirk ready.
"Merry Christmas, senpai-tachi."
