Albus Dumbledore paced his office. He just didn't know what to do. He had just lost his Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Quirrell. Who was he going to choose for the position?
He had two potential candidates for the job, but he didn't know whom to pick.
Still thinking, Dumbledore walked back to his desk and looked at the Sorting Hat. That gave him an idea! He would let the staff pick whom they would want to teach it.
He took out two pieces of parchment and wrote on them:
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry currently has no Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. I was wondering if you would be able to fill the position. If you can, please send an owl as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Albus Dumbledore
Dumbledore put the letters into two envelopes and addressed them, when he heard a knock at the door.
"Ahh, yes, come in," he said.
In walked Snape. He looked at Dumbledore and slowly opened his mouth to speak. "Headmaster, since Quirrel is not teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts, I was wondering if I could have the job."
Dumbledore frowned slightly. "Why Severus, you are the Potions Master. I think it would be of everyone's best interest if you stayed there. For finding excellent Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is easier than finding an excellent Potions teacher."
"I understand what you mean, Headmaster," Snape tried to say without disappointment. "Thank you for your time."
Dumbledore smiled. "I knew you would understand, Severus. Oh, and can you take these two letters to the Owlery for me?"
Snape nodded as Dumbledore handed him the letters.
"Thank you, Severus."
"Good day, Headmaster," Snape said walking out of the office.
He held the two letters upside down, before seeing who they were addressed to.
He turned the first letter over. Gilderoy Lockhart, it said. Snape couldn't understand why Dumbledore would choose Lockhart over him. The next one Snape had to admit, caught him off guard. It was addressed to the one, the only, Remus J. Lupin.
