"Longing"

Fred Dukes bit his lip, watching Wanda from across the table. He twiddled his fingers nervously, trying unsuccessfully to get the words that were stuck in his throat out. Lance and Todd were busy arguing over something or other in the living room, not even knowing how much of a dilemma Fred was finding himself in. His heart was torn. He really wanted to ask Wanda the question he'd been waiting to ask her for what felt like an eternity, but he didn't know if he could stand the pain of her saying "no." She might laugh in his face and tell him that he was a fat, worthless slob, or she might flip out and use her powers against him like she had done before when she was angry.
Come on, Dukes, he thought to himself, be a man. All right, here goes nothing...
"Hey, Wanda," he started, freezing as her eyes locked with his, "umm... uhh..."
"What is it, wide load, I haven't got all day," Wanda snarled.
"Are you going to eat that last cream-filled donut there?" he asked, breaking out in a cold sweat.
"No, you can have it... although it's not like you need the extra calories anyhow," she said, stalking out of the kitchen to go brood in her room. Fred grinned, snatching the donut out of the box and stroking it lovingly before inhaling it, finishing it off in one bite. The wonderful flavor of it filled his mouth with sheer pleasure and he let out a sigh as he swallowed it, feeling that it had left him far too soon. He smiled satisfactorily to himself. Sometimes the risk was worth the reward.
